question about monitor settings

What should I shoot for in terms of the computer's audio settings for my monitors for mixing? Should I set the bass and treble controls completely flat so as not to color the sound at all, or should I tailor the sound a bit to more resemble the stereo in the living room or car?

Thanks

A description (the hardware & software you're using & the physical placement of "things" in the room) of your set up would be useful before answering.

Where are those bass & treble controls you mention ?

The bass and treble that is part of windows volume control for my sound card (Audigy2).

I mean the question in general mixing terms, not my setup specifically. Should what you hear on the monitors be a completely flat signal, or should it be tailored to emulate a real stereo. If I know what a mix sounds like on my livingroom system, should I attempt to make my monitors sound the same?

in your case I may have a good idea... set the soundblaster card to whatever in terms of bass and treble, then play a record that you know very well, and study the monitoring response you get, from this study base all your recordings on the levels you hear from that recording...
    if that's a little unclear, i'm sorry
basically... play your favorite industry produced song on your current sound card and speakers... and apply those herd levels to that of all your recordings...

truthfully, at the end of the day I would say pitch the audigy and invest in a recording interface... you won't regret it.

    jiroe,

Yes, that's kind of how i've been approaching it. What do you recommend for an interface?

I have a tascam US-122. There is a newer model out now cant remember what its called. They are great little things when you get them working. Unfortunately they have a LOT of problems associated with them. If you get one you maybe be lucky and everything works well, but i know they often have issues with not working. Hardware incompatibilities is one of the big ones i think.

They have two XLR inputs with phantom power. Also have midi in and midi out. Zero latency direct monitoring as well.

There are some edirol and m-audio ones out there as welll for a similar price and generally the same features. I think they are probably the safer option to go with if your worried about compatibility problems.
