"Bad Moon Rising" - final mixes for new album
hi folks, this is my licensed cover of the classic CCR tune. it is the 10th song from the album that i've posted here, 10 out of 10 songs from the soon-to-be-released bats brew album called "Trouble". this is the last one.... i'm looking for any translation issues, or mix critiques. two versions: same mix, but two different mastering approaches. any comments are welcome. https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bad-moon-1https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bad-moon-2

Enjoyed both, and preferred the second mix. One musical point which you may or may not take - at the end of each 4 bar phrase, you may want to add some kind of a riff to move it to the next phrase. If you listen to CCR, they do so, and even augment the riff in the second section to move it a little more strongly. Best of luck with it.

Really cool version of this classic tune. Love the arrangement, the instrumentation and the vocals. Mix #2 is significantly hotter, to my ears, and I like it that way. The difference between the levels makes it hard for me to compare the two mixes because louder almost always makes things better :) Thoroughly enjoyed your rendition.

I like them both, the vocal sounds more prominent on the second to my furry ears, but am I also hearing some lip and tongue sounds as well?.
Nice job on them both, I think you need to choose the one you are happiest with.

I like Mix 2 but would bring the lead voc down a bit. Nice job.

My ears prefer #2. Is more "in your face" synonymous with "louder"? I dunno, maybe. I like the presence of #2. I feel as if I'm listening to you right in front of me. I like that. If that is solely due to "loudness", ok. Creative rendition. Nice slide work! Great harmonies. Works for me.

Really nice and refreshing take on this old Fogerty song. Love the blend of acoustic and electric. I prefer version #2.

sorry so late to respond to this, been on vacation in La Jolla, got seawater in my brain! wow, some great critiques and suggestions here..
so, to be clear, this is the SAME mix on both songs.
the only difference, was in the approach of the mastering. both songs were balanced EQ wise, exactly the same. that file saved, then put into wavelab with nothing but limiting on the 1st one, and a multiband linear phase compresser on the 2nd one, just to flatten the dynamics out a bit, and bring it up a bit louder. i believe that folks like the 2nd mix JUST because it's louder! heheh... which kinda falls in line with what all mastering engineers say..... i think if i decided to go with mix #2, i'd have to slightly re-mix it a bit to balance what would happen in mastering. then again, the first mix (Mix #1) is more true to the actual mix, and has a bit more dynamics to it.
clearly, #2 is preferred here.. i will probably end up with a mastering scheme that is exactly in between the two, and that's pretty much what i needed help deciding, so thank you to everyone that has helped me pull this project together. that's the last posting for all the songs that will become my next album release. on to the mastering!
