thanks mark! appreciate it....... this song, was during my PRE-Sonar days...... rig setup at the time: one the guitars and cabs used during tracking: this tune pretty much captures the sound of the boogie cranked real loud thru a pair of closed back 1x12's with greenbacks this was recorded with the venerable ole VS-1880 the guitar solo, was actually the original track from the demo i did on a VS-880ex, with only a sm57 and a ART Tube Mp preamp. most of the guitar work was done on my trusty old Carvin DC200K the carvin is a 1984 DC200K, with a shaved neck, duncan custom custom in the bridge, and a Kahler trem. it's a gibson scale length. i gotta tell you... all those switches, every one of them, is disconnected. LOL have been, since i put that Duncan Custom Custom in it around 1992. the pickup is directly connected to the volume pot, with no caps or resistors or tone control, ala van halen's old original setup. on this particular guitar, it really works well. but, to be fair, i have to say, when i bought the guitar, i was playing covers full time, and those switches (single/dual coil, phase and tap) all worked wonderfully. i could approximate ANY tone off this guitar, and put it to full advantage. later, i dialed it in for my own custom sound, and it's been that way ever since!

yes, you've been around long enough to have heard this one before... i have an all acoustic version of this as well, a drunken fest, really, i never post it, but it's fun/funny. chuck Cappreciate the comments! on the production: as i said earlier, this is an OLD production, done on a Roland VS-1880 (18 track 24 bit hard drive all in one machine) i wished i had the original mix handy, the one i did on my first roland machine, a VS-880EX.... (an eight track digital DAW)that was the machine that brought me to the vs planet website back in '99....... i needed help. i still do.... but anyway, the sonics of the 880ex were pretty good (20 bit, i believe), but i moved up to the VS-1880, and finished this song on that machine. the sonics were that much better, but i still used the original main rhythm track and Lead solo directly from the 880EX tracks, and damned if a simple little SM57 thru a ART Tube MP direct into the 880ex, didn't sound every bit as good as ANY track i've done recently, with a much more powerful system. there's a 'moral to the story' in there somewhere......

guitartrek glad you dig this one... you know, that carvin looks so nice, it's got that natural warm koa look to it.. but on close inspection, it's got war wounds! but they put a thick poly finish on it (i had the neck shaved, and had a nitro satin finish put on it, courtesy of Zion Music in N. Carolina) it is an extremely well made guitar, and one of the reasons i shout out for Carvin now and then. still going strong, almost 30 years after it was made.
wookie thanks for listening! tbosco appreciate the kind words! now, this is a finished mix, and has already been released on an album, so i wont be re-working any of the mix.... but i agree with you on your assessment. i had great drum tracks to work with on this project, and i wished i had mixed them hotter.

freddie J yep, this one is an older one... but i like to post them, to see how they sit with folks, to determine possible paths for new tunes i'm working on..... this song, has that 'feel' to it.... the meter, the swing, that stomping back and forth kind of thing... i'm working on a new tune that has a similar feel, so i'm curious if folks like this tempo and swing characteristic... glad you dig it, and thanks for commenting.

I'm not big fan of hot sauce but I love this song. I don't usually pursue tunes this heavy but the way you do it man... so many tight, cool changes. You win. That little trick at 1:12 is sublime! Beautifully packed together, nothing buried. If its got to be slammin', this is the way I want it. - D

Wow. Great guitar work and the vocals sound great. I'm curious as to how you did the harmony. Did you just use separate tracks of your vocals, or is it an effect? Maybe a stupid question.

sailor55 thanks man, even if you don't like hot sauces, you gave it a shot! heheh 1:12 eh..... hm. i gotta go back and listen to see what you are talking about now.....
ah, you are talking about the quick little double stop slide, the two notes that follow the chord change from E down to C..... so, that's two rhythm guitar tracks playing 7th chords, one full, one partial, and the solo guitar following with the 3rd...... appreciate the comments!

reboagni hey, appreciate the kind words. harmonies, are dirt simple, i just sing along and overdub backups on top of my lead vocal. every once in a while, i'll actually track the backgrounds FIRST.... if it's a very strict arrangement. then, i'll sing the lead vox around whatever the backups do...
@ss-backwards of the norm. but, more often than not, i track the lead, and go back and literally make up the first harmony on the spot.... really loosy goosy, almost like jamming with myself.
then learn it, sing it again, and do two more harmony parts, doubling the performance for each one (3 part harmony would be 6 performances) on this one song in particular, the harmonies are simple single passes. it didn't sound as good with the vocals stacked. and it's mostly two-part harmonies anyway, on this one. a few spots where it goes to 3 part. thanks for the interest!

Notnat appreciate the kind words there tanton... seriously, thanks.
munmun thanks! that's the sound of a loud cranked tube amp thru a cab, captured with a sm57 on it (references your other post about recording) - i tried to approximate that sound with a pod XT for a while, and just couldn't get to it, and gave up. most folks don't hear the difference, but you can really feel the difference when doing it! just some food for thought....

here's a better shot of the sauce bottle, and the lyric kinda matches the scene on the bottle Bat's Brew (Melange de la chauve-souris) Bat flyin' high overhead In the heart of the walking dead The fire breathes from it's mouth Melange de la chauve-souris Hotter and hotter it will get, No, it's not ready, do not fret Your journey will go far south Melange de la chauve-souris The moon is full, the water dark Tree limbs evil, missing bark Makes twisted fingers for the sky In the bat's brew you shall fry Melange de la chauve-souris If you partake of the brew The Moon grows red in front of you Just a drop is all you can do Melange de la chauve-souris
