"Break Free" - a new rock song from ReClaim

Hi Folks, it's been a while since I posted anything new here.

Please listen to "Break Free" on www.myspace.com/reclaim

It's about 6 mins long....starts quiet and ends BIG.

In terms of mix/mastering it's the one I'm happiest with so far...a definite improvement on my earlier submissions

We always end our sets with this song

Anyway, I hope you like it.....please let me know what you think....

Unusual sound and arrangement guys, I liked it a lot. Great guitar sounds throughout, especially the acoustics and the clean electrics.

The whole thing is really well recorded and mixed, bass & drums are working well, nothing to pick on at all here.

    Good work!

Thanks a lot. I'm pretty happy with it...just one or two niggles with the master I think. But it's a hell of a lot better than what I was producing a year ago.

Nice intro rhythmic percussion on the guitar(s).
Might need a bit more reverb on initial vocal--sounds dry.
    Nice melody on "Break Free".
The guitar part sounds a bit "mono"--which contrasts nicely with the "stereo" part on "Break Free".
Think I hear a bit of "break-up" on the "extreme" vocal at 2:08-2:09.
Again nice melody on "Break Free".
Riff at 3:03 seems like it goes on a bit long -- I'm waiting for something to happen.
But it keeps building, and one does get into the rhythm after a while.
    Wow--unexpected break at 4:50.
While the rest of the tune is OK, it's kind of anti-climatic and I don't hear you covering any new ground.
[Was wondering to myself if there was going to be more singing or not. Guess not. Oh well].
Overall, I think the first 4.5 minutes are well done, the last part is just OK.

    Hi Thanks for your comments

The vox break up was deliberate...kinda going for a loudpeaker sort of effect (political rally vibe). We did do clean takes but we went with the distorted vox...I thought it was a nice dynamic change.
Glad you liked the break! Structurally it's a bit unusual, maybe on 2nd listen you'll like it more. It goes down really well live...we usually finish with a more extravagant version live that's developed over the last year or so.

Yeah man, Sounds great. there really isn't much to complain about. The only thing is during the fist part of the bass "outro" the hi hat's sound a bit crunchy, but that may have been by design. It's just a preference. I typically like mine cleaner, but the hats in the recording do work just fine. Good work!

Yeah, actually I would normally go for a cleaner hi-fi sound myself on the hats. But on this occassion we recorded to tape on a mackie desk and really drove it, hence the slight hip-hop crunch. Just an experiment - esp as there is a very slight dance feel to the outro - I refer to the breakout bass in the middle of the outro (?) as my "Bernard Edwards" bassline (yes, a tad self-flattering, I know) Glad you like it though.

Just listened to "Seeing Clearly"... that's a freakin' awesome song, dude! I love it! I would only say on that one that there's a little mudiness down low, the guitars could be dialed back slightly, the drums could be a little louder and use some EQ, and the vocals could definately be louder and up-front. So many influences there... It reminds me of some of the better (US) import music that came out of the 80's... Great vocal quality and overall production.

"Beak Free" is good too. Drums have a nice biting quality, and another great vocal performance. I'd say that mix is a little muddy down low like the other tune, and the guitars are just a wee bit too loud relative to the vocals...

Great mix and a wonderful earthy sound to it all, cool tune and stunning bass work/sound actually the bass really steals the show here. What bass is that by the way?

    Thanks Opaque!

The bass is a 5 string walnut Alembic Epic run through a focusrite twintrak pro and run through two instances of Amplitube 1...one for crunch, one for deep bass. A bit of BBe sonic maximiser though my main out, plus a smidge of maxx bass, and waves l1 limiter. I think there was a mid range band very lightly compressed with sonitus multibanb.

Thanks for noting the earthy feel. I wanted to balance the sounds (esp kick drum) to retain their original acousticness, not twist them into a lot of the kick sound you hear today....the kick often sounds unnatural.

Yeah, the uncompressed wav is clearer.... the myspace version is slighlty less pristine. Although we were going for a warmer mix than you would normally hear today, the mastering engineer really slammed it!

Interesting what you say about the guitars relative to the vocals. Maybe it's a taste thing but I'll definitely take note.
