"Bumble Bee" A new Latin-Americano song - new (final?) mix up!

Hi,

Wrote this song today after listening a lot to Buena Vista Social Club and trying out my new bass.

Edit 3-13-13: Last mix I hope!  I replaced the midi claves and guiro and played the real thing.  Made some more mix changes.  I think I am done now!  :)

3-12-13:
Edit:  I have uploaded a new mix.  I added some percussion and things.  Please let me know what you think.

Thanks to all who gave me their feedback - it's much appreciated.

Lovely melodic guitars in this.  The reverb gave them an agreable atmospheric sound.

Your vocals sound great and it's a nice song.

Loved the understated percussion and the bass lines.

    Liked this a lot.

Do Latin Americans speak Latin? And if not? What's That For?

I would give you all my nectar, LOL! What a great play on words :-D Or not? My brain is just wired a certain way, sorry. This had a nice delicate quality to it. It may have a little too much tail? (something you'll very rarely hear ME say!) Meaning the verb tail on some of the vox parts.

Now if you took the flower out of this song, would you consider it, "deflowered?" (I'm sorry, see? I can't help it.)

Hi Philz - thank you for your kind words.  Please don't be jealous - this song must have been waiting to come up for a long time.  I really did listen to the Buena Vista Social Club for months and really loved the movie Ry Cooder did about them.
    Here's the movie's trailer:

Very nicely done!  The guitar is well recorded and the song have this nice hook.  However, for a Latin song you need to bring up the conga more.  It also needs more percussion.  You could add a Guiro.  I am not crazy about maracas and the wood blocks, but you can try those too.  Latin people like me, like a lot of salsa in their music.

Jimmy, you wrote and recorded a lovely song.  I thought you voice was rich just right for this song.  I liked the reverb, and the restraint you used on it.  It could take on a bit more percussion if you desired, but you have a strong foundation for any direction you want to go.

    All the best,

Mike - I am so glad you liked this.  Thanks for your post!

Vincente - I have been debating on the percussion arrangement (keep is really simple or not) and you have convinced me to work on it a little more.  Thank you for the kind words and comments.  I will keep in mind the suggestions when I remix.

Lynn - hi Lynn.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.  I really am happy that you like my vocals.  Sometimes you never know!

Notnat - Thank you much!  I like your "retro" comment a lot.  I did think about shortening the instrumental but what the heck, my first latin song so why not just go with it!

Hi Kev - Glad you liked it.  I played the acoustic lead parts last using my slim Yamaha electric/acoustic miked with a Behringer's XM8500 straight into my Zoom R24.  I really liked the sound it got.

This was much fun you guys and I can't tell you how much your feedback means to me!

Nice work Jimmy. I would suggest this needs more than a day though. It is a fabulous song in many ways, but it seems to need a little polish musically and performance wise. It feels a little rushed at times... things like ending a line with "Bumblebee", then starting the next one with "the Bumblebee", and so on. I think with some time, this will become an exceptional song.

foxwolfen - thanks for the good comments.  I am adding percussion, tweaking the vocals and doing a final mix tonight.  I will post when it is done.  I like the lyrics as is and believe they tell a good story.

Synchronicity! I just saw that movie two days ago, couldn't stop smiling throughout. Was very impressed at how funny the stories are in musica cubana. Y despues de ver a la pelicular, a mi sorpresa, yo hablo el lenguaje. However, your instrumentation is impeccable, terrific vocal harmonies, and a pristine mix. top notch work! Mark

The room sound you have on the mix caught my attention immediately. It reminded me of the interview with Ry Cooder where he said that as soon as they set up in the old EGREM studios they heard that signature room sound that shapes many of the great Cuban recordings from the big band era.

    You got it going on.

The other thing, and I think this is actually noteworthy, is that you seem to have grasped the simplistic beauty of many Cuban songs. You have written a plaintive song about a every day occurrence but you have imbued the story with a passion that makes everyday life seem like a celebration.

    That's good stuff!!!

It may not seem obvious because the song is so gentle and self assured... but this, seems to me, to be a very special recording.

Oh yeah, the new mix and percussion sound real good!

    best regards,

    Hi Mike,

I just woke up and with my first cup of coffee read your wonderful post.  I sincerely thank you.  It is really the best we can hope for in that someone else understands what an artist/songwriter (whatever we want to call ourselves) is trying to do.  I was so taken with Ry Cooder's movie and as I stated before, listen very intently to the genre of music and really learned a lot.  They used many simple ideas for lyrics with many of them about nature in beautiful clever ways.  There is much to learn about other styles of music and I seem to be up to the challenge of taking a stab at it simply to grow.

You certainly made me smile Mike.  I read your post to my wife Karen and she loved it to.  It's not that I am looking for praise as much as knowing that others are being touched and/or understand the purpose of a creation no matter how small.  There are many talented writers on this forum and it is so great to listen to so much creativity.  Yahoo!

    All the best,

    Jimmy

Very cool.  If you’d said here’s a traditional folk song that I recorded, I would have assumed this was a song handed down for many generations because  it’s melodic , appealing to the ear and it has a simplicity (for lack of a better word) that seems to be the case with many well loved folk songs. Love the recording as well. You managed to capture a sort of innocence and respect for nature in this -  bestowed some dignity upon these “living things” through your observation of  them. Great job.

Very nice! Agree with Mike that the space evoked by the mix sounds really great. Very clear mix and the BGV really pop nicely. Congrats!

I enjoyed that!  Your voice is perfect for this...I love the percussion (didn't hear it before, but I like this)...yeah...just a cool song and great mix.  One day?  Unreal!  :)

Hi Dan,  thanks much.  I just tweaked the mix and added real clave and quiro.  Brought up the lead voc a tad and fixed the ending.  Let me know your thoughts if you come by again.

    Thanks.
