i simply add a track, and immediately try to save the project and i get that error, no matter what type of track i am adding.  seems like i reached a limit in number of tracks allowed?

I have received an error message like that in Sonar 8.5 a few times. I used to reboot to fix it that but one time I exported an audio track as a wave file to see if I could do that, and I could, and then I could save the project normally. I have no idea why that worked, but it did.

well, there is a limit in the number of tracks you can have in SHS.  how many tracks are in your project?

tell us about your computer system, operating system, hard drive.  how full is it?  how many hard drives do you have and which one are you using for sonar projects?

hatflyer - I'm not trying to bust your chops or anything, but you're not giving us much information to help you with.  give us as much detail as you can.  remember we can't see what you're doing or what you're seeing.

i believe all that info is in my first post.  my main hard drive where the project is saved has about 15 GB open.  there is no problem until i try to add another track.

How many tracks are audio? MIDI? Soft synths?

all but 1 are soft synths.  when i add an extra track, it plays fine.  it's just when i go to save the project that i get an error.

sorry - this is more what I meant.  I wasn't clear enough.

SHS should be unlimited MIDI tracks, but I don't know how they determine what an "audio" track is - if they count the softsynth output as an "audio" track then you could be reaching the limit.  the audio track limit is 64.

also, tho; are you using one harddrive, I assume?  how big is it and how much room do you have?  and when's the last time you defragged?

my projects are saved in my internal hard drive.  15GB of 80GB are empty.  i tried saving it to my external hard drive, that has 200GB free space (no fragments) and i get the same issue.   looks like i've hit the tracks number limit i guess.

When you try to exceed the track or bus limit in Home Studio, an error message appears informing you that you have reached the limit and you will be prevented from adding the track or bus.  This is true for HS6 anyway.  I presume that HS7 is the same.

Are you saving as a CWP or CWB? Is it perhaps exceeding the 2GB filesize limit? Is your drive formatted using NTFS?

i'm saving as a cwp file.  as for 2GB limit, the file size is just 1.3MB.  i heard back from cakewalk and they said the limit on # of tracks is 64.  had to follow up to try to get a better answer.

It's not only the file size, but the amount of RAM taken up by the program when it's running, which is also limited to 2GB.  Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) to view the RAM usage.

I would also suggest trying to save the project to an internal drive.

my projects are saved in my internal hard drive. 15GB of 80GB are empty.

That's pretty skimpy. Try to free up more room on that drive even if you're saving to another drive. You should replace that drive with a larger drive. Anytime a drive has less than 20% free space, you're playing with danger.

Also, even though the CWP file is only 1.3 MB, that's because it does not contain the audio tracks which are in separate files. If you have 54 audio tracks and they are 3 minutes each, that's 1.6 GB. (54 x 3 x 10MB per minute).

Have you tried saving as a CWB file? That will give you an idea of the true size of the project since that contains the MIDI and audio tracks.

RAM usage is about 1.25GB.  As I said, the project plays when I add the last track, so I guess it has enough RAM?

The size of the CWB file type is only 41 MB.

I do not know if this would work or if it is even what you want to do but you could start bouncing some of those midi tracks down to audio then freeze and archive them (or just delete them). One thing you havent mentioned is how many synths and effects plugins you have going... That where you could potentially be running into a memory situation.. Just an idea...... Since I assume you already have the project saved give it a try and save it as a new project but on the other drive you mentioned.... Also.... IF I read correctly you have an 85 gig hard drive with 15 gigs left. In that case you are running close to the edge on that hard drive as Windows allocates a certain amount of hard drive memory as virtual memory...Might want to keep that in mind as well..... Cause if the program says it can handle 64 tracks and your only running 54 then your not running into that wall.
