"Cannot write file--disk may be full" crash when loading a project
This is happening to me more frequently these days... I'll open a song I was working on the prior session, and I get the dreaded yellow triangled explanation point with "Cannot write file--disk may be full" which, of course, isn't the case. If I try and play what played fine before, crash, control/alt/delete then restart X3 or reboot.... repeats. I've tried saving to other disks which sometimes works. I've varied my disk saving location (ie, song hard drive, ssd current projects directory, or external drive... doesn't matter. sometimes I can change the name and it'll save and then play fine. Sometimes not, then have to go back to prior version. Any thoughts? Annoying as, well you know... BTW, I've had this happen enough and sent in the "Fault Reporter" minidumps but awhile back this stopped working with the message, (big red circle with an "X") "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately" needless to say, no go on this front anymore.... the details button reveils the following: " See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box. ************** Exception Text ************** System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found. at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) at PhoneHome.CakeService.CakewalkDataService.ETPhoneHome(Byte[] CrashFiles, String FileName, String SerialNumber, String EmailAddress, String UserName, String CrashDescription, String AppName, String AppVersion, String Architecture) at PhoneHome.Form1.ResendSaved() at PhoneHome.Form1.btnSend_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnMouseUp(MouseEventArgs mevent) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WmMouseUp(Message& m, MouseButtons button, Int32 clicks) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.ButtonBase.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Button.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

looks like the JIT is reporting that the cakewalk crash reporter is crashing - lol for the disk write error - does any other program have issues saving to the disk? I'd make sure your disk is not beginning to fail, check the system/application event logs for any disk related errors - maybe try running chkdsk against your drives

See if the trick in this thread works for you. Took a while to find it, but that thread is also very similar (and not all useful). Edit: Here is the post I was actually looking for that Craig had done in the same thread (try the article in his link there).

Some folks reported success in the past, by increasing a parameter in the Aud.ini file called DiskRecBufferSize, from 64 to 512. Others reported success by deleting the Aud.ini file (Sonar will rebuild it when it starts). Noel had posted something a while back about if you are using bundles. Something about the bundle size growing. And others have had this when their projects had mixed sample rates, occasionally. Are you using 32-bit Sonar or 64-bit? Anyways - I hope something in one of the above bits is helpful. If you do want to try increasing DiskRecBufferSize in Aud.ini, open the file with Notepad and make your changes. Bob Bone

Thanks, guys! I'll give those tips a gander tonight when I begin mucking around. I'm also going to try loading a troublesome song and go away for a bit. I think Kontakt may be the underlying problem as I succeeded in loading the most recent troublesome song when I broke off to make coffee and voila! success in playing/saving. I have noticed Kontakt often is continuing to load without any indication. Thanks again. Getting to the root of things would be nice. Aside from this, my time with X3 is orgasmic, thus, all in all it is an annoyance at the start of sessions at times. Hopefully your thoughts will result in utter bliss from start to finish, except for my lousy drumming skills! BTW, forum search is a bit frustrating at times as I tried to find posts you located, met... first, get no results then we're told to wait awhile to search again! Seems dumb... when I'm googling, I keep refining search terms but here I need to go have a pot of tea first? A big annoyance at an otherwise stellar forum resource.

> looks like the JIT is reporting that the cakewalk crash reporter is crashing - lolIt's not Jit and this is not an ASP.NET app so you don't need Just In Time debugging. It's sending the error message to cakewalk via SOAP in XML format, maybe your firewall is blocking the Cakewalk server? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOAP What's weird is that this seems to be errors with the .NET framework, weird because Cake told me there don't use .NET libraries but it definitely looks like they do here!!!! They are at least using it to send your error report (SOAP). So the GAC is corrupted perhaps, generally I would clear the GAC cache out first but probably best to update/reinstall .NET: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40773 BTW this should also be available via windows update (probably the optional area). If that doesn't work I have one other suggestion that that is deleting what is in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache). That should fix your error reporting issue anyway unless you do have a firewall blocking it.

Although it actually does look like your firewall: System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found. You can't see their server, and Cake's code isn't handling this error correctly. Still I would update .NET 4 nevertheless.

Bah - He could probably add those JIT debugging lines to the FaultReporter.exe.config located in the cakewalk\shared utilities\ folder... Not important though hence I didn't give it any further thought just found it amusing that an exception occurred with the faultreporter trying to report an exception - seriously you got to see the humour in that right? Although, your most likely right with saying firewall could be blocking it from sending the report to cakewalk... The real issue though is why is there are problem with full disk being reported??

Jimmy it's not JIT in just the way Sonar is not Apple! Yes I get the humour, but it ain't JIT :) I have logged CWBRN-24249 specifically to do with the .NET SOAP error reporting bug when it cannot see the server, it should in fact should just display something like "Cakewalk problem reporter server is unavailable" instead, but clearly this has not been implemented (it would be an enhancement request in fact, however all error exception messages are in fact bugs.. although I hold my breath on this one).

There are two issues Jimmy, and I've covered one of them. I'll think about the other one in the meantime Dana should run windows update everywhere including optional updates, and update .NET framework I suggest (and what others say).

Search with Google instead, with terms like : site:cakewalk.com forum kontakt long load x2 The above restricts Google to the Cakewalk site, then terms 'forum', 'kontakt', 'long', 'load', and 'x2' Give that a shot for searching, using whatever terms you want. Bob Bone

Shoulda woulda booda,.. so is your filesystem corrupt or something? What are you saying? Are you able to check your windows event logs using event viewer to see if there are related errors and are there errors while trying to save a file from any other app on your system, for instance notepad.exe? nope to all, Jim...i was just making a joke about Alex reminding me to backup before I blew up my computer trying to do what he suggested! Everything else, even x3 works fine...write my music on the rig. This is a drive independent issue...Seems to be when saving a song with lots going on... several kontakt/play in multi channel mode with large sample instruments (got plenty ram) I'll have to figure out event viewer...and check next time. Also going to see if it's kontakt/play loading slowly, hiding its actions (seems to exit "loading"window too fast on "Ew" files, like pianos which I know load snail paced. It's funny...I first noticed this issue when x3 would crash when I hit play after loading a song from a prior good session. My work around became saving it to a different drive then playing, which worked...mostly. To my pea brain I figured the file wasn't corrupt but hanging for some reason on completely loading. I'm gonna try some things you all have suggested over the next couple evenings (while still having fun learning/composing) and I'll follow up over the weekend... Heavy garden schedule till Sunday! Thanks all...I have enough to reflect on thru the weekend! Still having the fun of my life using this glorious creation ..

Might have more suggestions if no joy. Once you've gone through it please summarise what you've done, I'm sure you have enough on your plate in the meantime, suggestions from others (and .net update) are the ticket right now I suggest... Thanks...

Yea, I'll try to b organized, and I'm sure crash dumps are being stored somewhere. Will summarized/forward all to the geniuses if solutions don't arrive out of ur help. Will even try loading up older non kontakt/play songs repeatedly to see if it may b outsideour only occurring in this area. I'll let this go dormant into next week till I have more to report. Gotta get some real creating time in and mostly have always recovered....albeit time/annoyance You've given me plenty to explore during moments of "coitus interuptus"! I'll keep the thread up on a different screen from now on. Thanks!

Yep, mettelus, and I appreciate the links... my comment was a general one, in that when trying to search, if at first you don't succeed, you have to wait... and wait... then try again. Why? I think it reduces the effectiveness of searching in the moment, that's all. BTW, tonight I've been able to load things fine, by waiting a minute or so after it appears as if everything is loaded... first night (about 12 hours now) where I've loaded and tweaked several projects and just test loaded projects that crashed before, by exercising that forum search function requirement... wait....and wait a bit longer. Might be incomplete loading after all... same for saving...if this works, I'll be a happy camper and don't really care why I'm having to wait a minute or two for a song to load cause once I'm rollin', everything's rock solid... ...and X-rated bliss is worth waiting for!

Oh, yea, Alex...we'd all get a lot of composing done then! Already have enough trouble with email popup distractions from a bud who's new to X3 and pinging me for help every evening! I need to limit this forum thing...it's addicting! Illustrates how humans really do love community... don't do it, Alex... and DON'T tell Panu or he'll wip it out in an evening! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I'm swearing off for the night... already blew part of my mortgage money on spotlight strings cause I visited the software side! (really, )

Hey, Bob, one thing I'm realizing as I switch to part time work/more songwriting... is how little, if at all, I use a lot of what I've acquired... Overall my cost of living is quite frugal and I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to create a wonderful urban farmstead here in Oakland, now sharing the property with younger, energetic folks who help keep it all going. I'm also leading towards the less is better mentality and decluttering. So, hopefully I'll b able to adhere to my new mantra, "enough!" Which equals less need to work and more music!

I have come to that place, as well, and am enjoying looking to use what I have, rather than pursuing more gear for no particular reason. I have thousands of sounds I will never use, and synths that allow me to create anything I can foresee needing, so if the Beatles can have a number 1 song that contains a KAZOO solo, I think I will worry more about the quality of the writing than anything. Of course, there are a lot of shiny new baubles that come around the end of every month, and I too fell victim to picking up a new soft synth collection just 3 weeks ago, so.............. Bob Bone

Sounds like the file is already opened, then trying to re-open. Run two of these in a row and bam you get the 'disk full error' if(file.Open(m_tempFile, CFile::modeRead|CFile::typeText)) ... That's pretty funny, since I was coding in VC++ this morning and had the exact same bug in my code.... :p

I can now say, pretty definitely the crashes seem to be associated with trying to start playing or diddling with a file (even just adjusting mixer moduals or what is showing on the console view too early. since getting up and walking away for awhile I'm not getting crashes. Why it "appears" to be finished but takes additional time, I have no idea. I've just started setting a timer for 2 minutes before touching anything. seems to be working.
