Concrete Sky
©2012 Words and Music All Rights Reserved by Bob Oister
Verse #1:
The sun peeks over the horizon like an eye
Daylight breaks with people rising with a sigh
I never dreamed of fighting monsters for a lie
I wasn't born to die beneath a concrete sky
Chorus #1:
Don't want to live a lie
I'm not afraid to die
I'm gonna face the fire
Beneath the concrete sky

Verse #2:
Living like a soldier in a city gone awry
Wanting to grow older just trying to survive
I never dreamed of fighting here just to stay alive
I wasn't born to live and breathe beneath a concrete sky

Chorus #2:
Don't want to live a lie
I'm not afraid to die
I'm gonna face the fire
Beneath the concrete sky
Guitar Solo

Chorus #3:
Don't want to live a lie
I'm not afraid to die
I'm gonna face the fire
Beneath the concrete sky

This is classic Oister... One of my favorites of yours. The mix is powerful, the drums and bass are beating me like a redneck wife in a trailer park... Awesome tone on the lead guitar. And  wow :-) an acoustic guitar? LOL! I didn't expect that!

It didn't feel like 3:29? It felt like 2 mins? So I think you have a hit here.

Not really my thing genre wise, but you're always worthy of a listen from a production point of view regardless. I like the vocal fx and the chorus/ending  is really strong  - liked that a lot.

I played this one loud and was rewarded.  Very nice production and performance.  The bottom end was rock solid, and the vocals were in your face.  The guitar tone was just right for the song, and the lyrics were good.  Very well done.

woah dude this one must be your heaviest? kinda like Bruce Dickinson solo or Nevermore slowed down. the drums sound better on this one. not sure on the segue at the end of the chorus into the little interlude, sounds a little rushed. but otherwise, this is your best 'first-time' mix, everything is at a good level. needs to be longer though, c'mon!

    Hey Bob,

Here's another new one that I slapped together over the past couple of nights.

Just slapped this together, did you? haha

This is one of your best, man. Love how the verse riff contrasts with the melodic chorus...really nice.
The mix sounds massive on my cheap speakers and "Concrete Sky" is a cool title/hook IMO.

The guitar and vocal are, of course, outstanding.

Nice job Bob!  Really like your guitar work.  Sometimes some parts seem like they are pushing the drums a bit.  For your vocals, the lead is in a very comfortable pitch for you.  Did you try raising the key up to see how you would sound "reaching" for it a bit to add some edge?  Just a thought.  The background vocs are killer.  Nice job all around.

    Hey Bob
WOW great tune. Some heavier GOTH tones in this piece but you nailed it.  Love the ending break at 3:03.  Nice work on the drum rolls and double kick.  Man, do you have the vox for rock.  Those harmonies are killer. KUDOS!

Great stuff Bob. Your mixes always are very clean and diction very clear and precise.
Is metal supposed to be clean?
    I really haven't a clue.
But, I would think metal is more smashed and wet and maybe a little sloppy, no?
I noticed when your solo came in quite loud how it squashed the drums in the mix. I guess your buss compressor kicked in. Anyway, I thought the sound of the drums (not the volume) at that point was more better. Great stuff though.

    Another pearl from the Oister

Absolutely the heaviest I've heard from you yet Bob, tremendous stuff. You always have a melodic edge to your songs that lift them right up for me, the chorus here is just fantastic, it really soars. Great solo too, nicely put together and resolved. That acoustic breakdown was a total surprise!

Bloody awesome. Always got a take a listen at your stuff because you never have to concentrate on the mix, just enjoy the song. I really enjoyed this cos you pushed the boat out another bit by making it super heavy and what iced it for me was the chorus "aahhhs" and the acoustic rendition at the end. A1 Bob.

    Hi, Paul,

Thank you, kind sir!  To me, that's one of the best compliments I can receive, when someone who doesn't normally listen to this genre still checks it out for production value.  I also do the same thing, and doing that on this forum has taught me quite a bit.  I always try to learn something production-wise, from many of the song posts in other genres here.  The fine folks here on the forum do some fantastic work in many different styles, and I think it's what really makes this place such a cool community.

Thanks, again, Paul, I really appreciate you taking time to listen and value your comments highly.  Have a great day!

    HEY BOB, GREAT TUNE!

    great performances...

mix-wise, i dig all the guitar tones, reminds me of some of the best of megadeath....

personally, i don't care for the attack-y kick drum, i think it's distracting from the groove....
i like the treble bit on the snare and toms, but not on the kick. the kick time is too dead-on, and the guitars and vox kind of push and pull the time, so smoothing off the kick tone, would relax the overall timing a bit.

and the vox are mixed too hot, i think blending them down into the bed of the soundtrack would make them more spooky, and more 'band' sounding....
but these are subjective critiques, you did a great job on this one.

i like the break down part at the end....
and really dig the solo, perfect.
