"Dark Will Fade"

I was listening to some of my old tunes and I came across this one...

I'd like to re-arrange/record the drum trac with live drums... comments/suggestions?

Definitely a strong CSN vibe there.

I wouldn't change a thing. This has been one of my favs. The guitar work is about as tasty and toneful as allowed in this millenium.

If you really gotta go mucking about though, maybe just some congas starting at second verse or some more ghost (echo) notes on the stick here and there.

Dude!!!!  I remember this one.  It's on your CD if I'm not mistaken.  My buddy, Michael Eastman (Phoenix guitar player)) just loves your CD as do I.  This is a very soulful tune.  You've got not shortage of soul, my friend!  I listened to "Blues You Can Use" so much that I retired it for awhile.  Time to break it back out!

I agree that it sounds fine as it is.  I don't hear a need for a change.

I am glad you posted this.

Eh? Not sure I understand the question. If doing live drums then you probably will compress it some adding more punch perhaps in the end but overshadowing the song as it is now and still about end up with the drums sounding the same. If it is for dynamics to make the drums seem more real, the compressing and the mic placement is going to become a major project and although sounding a bit better perhaps there is just some manipulation of the drums sounds in the song right now that you can do without doing all of that setup for live drums. But doing the drums in midi also takes a lot of time even though the drums in the end can sound better (except for the drums sounds ?) or more dynamic, so saving some time recording real drums can cut down on the time spent with that endeavor of all the editing done with midi tracks. Well, all of that is up to you then on whatever you hope to achieve with the drum sounds.

Sublime guitar work and the vocals/harmonies in some of this were sooo super smooth that my brain secreted to much endorphin! Great work Frank.

    Frank,

I have to agree with the rest, sounds excellent as is.   If you want a more "live drum sound" maybe set-up a Drum Room bus to create a little bit of ambience.  I found this link a while ago and found it interesting.   Great song, love the guitar.

    Really good tune.

This has hints of a lot of influence. CSN, Steely dan, SRV, Todd Rundgren and a few others.

I love the way your guitar plays off the keys. Some terrific chord changes. Geez, when do we see the Frank Tanton Song Book for Guitarists? Some lead work that reminds me of Walter Becker with a little added flash. Great job.

Wow, never heard this one before if my aging brain remembers correctly.  Great tune, and for me the guitar work and that big fat EP were to die for.  Dave on EP and vocals, I guess?  Kudos on this one.

As far as the drums go, why not give it a try?  I personally didn't find anything lacking on the percussion side, but there is that magic to live drums, so why not give it a shot?

    Loved this.
