. This is really a cool tune to listen too, definitely different. The mix is great as is to my ears. The piano sounds really good also. It starts out like one of those old public service films from the 60's or 70's and then gets a little jazzy and then gets a little more modern, at least that is how I interpreted it. I have no clue as far as genre, maybe start a new one, alternative easy listening . I enjoyed the listen!

Nice one Tom! Starts out with some ambient, glitchy, trippy stuff. Digging the creepy voiceovers with a bit of crackling. Funky drumming. Love the expressive violin solo over the EP and phoned-in vocal. :) Then the crazy string stomp section. Wow. Perhaps this belongs in the #TourDeForce category. ;) Really loved this one, bud. :)

this is kinda chill, and trippy at the same time.. it almost sounds old school mellow jazz, but then is modern at the same time... then it goes into the second half like a time warped country tune, created by some alien in the future after it finds that gold record on the voyager......! nice recording man

Guess genre would be some 'alternative' one..sorry not sure which one but you can choose a couple there probably. Great tune I thought...something else but real nice. Would let the hiss noise from the vocals run through the whole start of the song also in the parts where there are no vocals, would sound more natural/authentic imo. For my taste that sidestick has a hair too much reverb tail That's a great drum groove + awesome sounding kit around 1.20min, you could turn that up 0.1db I think. Would use only that pattern and some 'in the groove' breaks, it really grooves big time, would leave out fiddly snare/hihat things but that's just my personal taste. The telephone vocals are a touch hard to understand, maybe a little less telephone effect and add 0.1 or 0.2db to that vocal because the words really add to the song and need to be heared. The strings sound a tiny hair 'late', just a hair that's probably caused by VST or plugin latency I'm guessing, it's not a prob but they are so nice I thought it's a shame they're 0.1 hair late. Anyway, again great song/production and really like your originality, songwriting, spot on. mix sounds very good

thanks y'all . . . Teego, you are brilliant and have solved the genre identity disorder - "Alternative Easy Listening" totally works for me! Thanks for listening . . . you mentioned "public service films" and that is indeed where I ripped the spoken audio clips, but they are from the 1940's! Walt, very happy indeed you liked it! I always struggle to make my mixes clear and distinct - like yours - that's the hardest part! Writing quirky parts comes all too easy to me. I want to do more spoken word stuff like this. Thanks for the encouragement! Dan, thanks! The drums are our good old friend AD2, mixed with a liberal dose of Omnisphere. Would that I actually knew how to play real drums beyond the Ringo Starr level. Thanks much, glad you enjoyed the blog, too! You must be a little bit mental, like me? Batsbrew, great descriptions! Boy, how cool would it be to have a song on that gold disc! I was aiming for a modern take on something old and jazzy - thanks for the listen and the comments! Wouter, your specific comments are noted - thanks for those ideas. I completely agree about the vocals, however brief they appear. I'll jack 'em up a little. Your ears have also picked up on those strings being a little late in spots. - it's actually five different string vst's all added together. I'm not sure that "more is more" and I'll re-look at this - great catch! Ok, thanks for reading, thanks for listening - great comments all! -Tom

Sound great to my amateur ears Tom... Lots a great elements in there... Love the snippets of vocals. Kind of jazzy and funky, if you know what I mean... Took me on a great "journey" (joking) My favourite part is the facepalm picture you use for the song haha! cheers andy

Yeah, no genre comments here - not a freakin' clue! But I will say this - the song is a journey. A pleasant one through many dissimilar areas and cultures. Really, really good stuff and mixed clean and clear. And as Tim pointed out, the piano sounds awesome!

Tom, This is massively cool. as usual. The title and subject matter made me think really hard as I would like to think I'm not a total misanthrope. Oh, what the hell? Maybe I don't like people. that much. I accept the challenge of genre assignment. It starts out as a spoken word thing over a shifting jazz-funk groove that segues with a song fragment about the same topic. Which segues with an uptempo pop-rock instramental/piano solo which I think develops the theme further. I hear multiple genres with overlap; whatever Gil Scott Heron & Marvin Gay/What's Going On were doing, connecting to a partial of a conventional song, with an uptempo vamp out. I like the seamless quality of this complex number. Reminds me of Mayans in that way. Great playing with both keys and strings. Real good stuff. I've already listened to it multiple times. Cheers, Bert

This is really cool! Most interesting thing I've listened to in a while. Very creative. Mixwise, I sometimes lose the definition/attack of the bass in the first half of the song. It's fine in the slower section under the violin and the rest of the song thereafter. Maybe just a touch of eq adjustment under the fuller parts early on?

Really well done Tom! I love the way it builds rhythmically and instrumentally. One of my favourites here at the moment. My only thought on the mix is, the crackling over the spoken vocal can seem a bit intrusive the way it enters and exits. Not sure on what the solution is, maybe a slower fade in/out if that's possible. Regarding that genre, I think it moves between a kind of "Early Spiritual Soul" into a "Contemporary Eclectic Jazz". It's kind of hard to pin down because there are so many layers, but that's not a bad thing. It is what it is and that's a good thing regarding this song. As I said it's definitely one of my favourites here. Okay, back for another listen.

hey, Tom I didn't read all of the comments before posting this, so if it's already been said, then feel free to ignore the heck out of me! I didn't like that the noise from the voice over went away between the voice over bits, it sounded unnatural that way. the low mids are muddy in this and the bass is as well. I'd suggest notching some of that out and give the bass some clarity. the reverb could probably use some high pass also to clean up that lower end. the piano sounds like it's in a different space than everything else - the verb on it is very different from the strings, drums, bass ha! hoe down in the middle! love the fiddlin'! but that piano verb is really distracting to me and the noise on the voice over or lack thereof in other places. cool tune, very creative! fantastic playing! If you don't like any of my comments, well, remember I'm just a dawg...
