"Dorchester" Doesn't Listen To My Custom Folder Settings
I set all my custom Sonar folders in preferences to the following: E:\DAW\Sonar Platinum\xxx (where xxx = project templates, track templates, drum maps, etc...) basically anything that can be set in the folder preferences. So what does the Dorchester update do? Installs everything to: E:\DAW\Sonar Platinum\Sonar Platinum\xxx Why is it adding another "Sonar Platinum" folder?
And underneath that, it makes all the same folders I already have one level up! Ever since the Command Center, it seems like we lose more control of where things are placed and it doesn't care where you have your things, it's gonna put updates, well - wherever.

alewgro Why is it adding another "Sonar Platinum" folder? In the CCC system dialog box, where did you specify installing the downloaded files?

In the CCC system dialog box, where did you specify installing the downloaded files? I have a seperate area for the install area - nothing related with the path above. The install folder is only where the Installers go... this is actual stuff the installers put on my hard drive. Its the same stuff, track templates, your FX chains, etc... i got them all already in the first Sonar Platinum folder, then they installed them again in Sonar Platinum\Sonar Platinum. ;(

This happens to me often with a variety of programs. I suspect what's happening is that the program wants to install a SONAR Platinum folder under whichever folder you specify for the install, so it installs SONAR Platinum under SONAR Platinum. It's probably not smart enough to move up the tree and parse folder names to see if it's a duplicate, and even if it could, might not do that on the theory that you might want to install a "Folder A" under a "Folder A."

Probably needs fixing then, because - really what is the difference if its in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Sonar Platinum or my E:\Sonar Platinum? I should put this post in the Bug forum I guess.

Just leave the post here until the same issue is supported by the experience of others and then get a Cakewalk problem report number.

I think you could choose just E;\, and it should install there under E:\ Sonar Platinum. I have all my Cakewalk content and Samples on a separate drive, and all the updates have been installed where they were supposed to.

I've checked mine and as usual my folders are where I put them. All my Cakewalk Content is on another drive.

That's how I decide to work, that is using mklink, to create junction points.
I've taken all the default folders like Cakewalk/VSTPlugins, C:/ Cakewalk Content, C:/Cakewalk Projects and created links to my own locations. It works exceptionally well and I was pleased to see that the Dorchester release (the first time I had it all setup) just worked, everything went where it should without any intervention from me.

I may have misinterpreted what you said. Are you talking about the location where a release downloads its files, or where the SONAR excecutable program itself is installed?

Oh thats ok.. actually NEITHER. my EXE is still in my C:\Program Files\Sonar. I am just talking the Cakewalk Content folder. So for instance, I manually moved the track templates, track icons, Anderton FX Chains, etc... to E:\Sonar Platinum, then Dorchester installed them again at E:\Sonar Platinum\Sonar Platinum. It's OK, i fixed it by merging the folders, but I assume every update will do this, which is quite annoying.

If it did it once, I would expect it do do it every time too. The new "Cakewalk Content" location should not contain the product name. Cakewalk installers append the product name to the "Cakewalk Content" folder name. For example, when installing "SONAR Platinum" the installer looks at the "ContentDir" entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software appends "\SONAR Platinum" to it and installs in the appropriate folders that path.

FWIW, my relocated "Cakewalk Content" has worked correctly with every installer from X1 through Dorchester. I do not think the problem lies with the installers. My "ContentDir" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software is set to "N:\Cakewalk Content"

Since you lessons on the mklink command I simply created a link from C:/ Cakewalk Content to G:/Cakewalk Content and it's worked fine. Is there a reason why it would be better as a registry edit than using mklink?

No, either way works. My machine is setup with a combination of registry edits and directory junctions as a result of testing. The point for this thread is how the Cakewalk installers place "Cakewalk Content" in product specific folders.

Weird - my Contentdir = E:\Sonar Platinum not E:\Sonar Platinum\Sonar Platinum... yet it placed contents into E:\Sonar Platinum\Sonar Platinum and left my original content folders under E:\Sonar Platinum. I just merged the two into my original location and all seems OK, but i just find it weird it did that.

Makes sense to me. ContentDir is not SONAR version or even SONAR specific. When a Cakewalk installer reads ContentDir it appends the product being installed to the path. For example, if Contentdir = "E:\Sonar Platinum" here is where the following products would install their Cakewalk Content: - X3 Producer - "E:\Sonar Platinum\SONAR X3 Producer"
- SONAR Platinum - "E:\Sonar Platinum\SONAR Platinum"
- Rapture Pro - "E:\Sonar Platinum\Rapture Pro"

Yes, but why? It led me to have the following: "E:\Sonar Platinum\SONAR Platinum\Drum Maps" and my existing Drum Maps at: "E:\Sonar Platinum\Drum Maps" I feel the software allowed something to break here.

Because the installer does not read SONAR preferences, never has. Preferences have nothing to do with ContentDir other than it serves as part of the default paths. Cakewalk installers look at ContentDir and you have specified a product path where there should be a generic Cakewalk Content path. Should you purchase and install Rapture Pro, the content for Rapture Pro, based on your ContentDir will install in "E:\Sonar Platinum\Rapture Pro" an odd location for something which has nothing to do with SONAR Platinum.
