"Encountered an Improper Argument"
"Encountered an Improper Argument" is the error (crash) message that I just received when trying to view the PRV on a midi track in my latest song. Sixth crash in 2 days on X2 (after zero crashes in over a year, same machine, same hardware, using 8.3).
Has anyone else encountered this? I can view PRV in other song files, and I could view it in THIS song file yesterday, but today, it just brings up the left hand keyboard image, but with no PRV displayed (it just shows whatever was "behind" what should be the new PRV). Wow, not promising. Hundred$ wasted. Sticking with 8.3, if this is the way this new Xcrement2 behaves.
Pardon my ****ing; sincerely hoping that someone can show me the light out of my frustration. I've been a staunch Cake defender for ages, but I've never seen such buggy behavior from a Cake product than my first 3 days on X2 (and this is on a Sonor-only PC that runs 8.3 error-free). WTH?
Thanks guys,
Ed

I haven't seen it, others may have, maybe you should give the full error message to Cakewalk with the steps to reproduce. No mention here of your hardware or software. Are you running 64 bit for instance because if you are running 32 bit no wonder I could not repro. Ed - Have you installed the quickfix? I wouldn't use X2 in production until first/second or third service packs are out (depending how good they are).... it's just a repeat here of what happened with X1, and X1 is now as stable as a rock with service packs. Cheers Alex

I am running 64 bit - I will research this "quick fix" now - thanks for the tip!

OS is 64 bit Windows 7. Dedicated audio only DAW - no other programs, nothing third party, nada. Quad core Intel PC, optimised for Sonar / audio recording. No wireless or network connection even. The only non-Cake thing on it is the driver for my Mackie Onyx Firewire sound card, which has been behaving properly for over a year. Been running Sonar 8.3 for the last year+ without a hitch. Only change is this weekend I installed X2. That's it. I read up on the "quickfix" and it didn't seem applicable to any of my crashes or errors, although I might just download it "just in case it helps anyway". Thanks, Ed

So it is quick fix, update Mackie driver (may not be buggie on one app, but may be buggie on another) and no third party plugins? Running windows update a few times is a good idea. Also observe whether issue happens with new X2 projects, and check Windows event viewer.... Cheers.

No third party plugs. Soundcard driver is the latest (actually, the ONLY one they have for win 7). Win O.S. is a one year old win 7; I really don't run updates because it is not on the net (it only runs Sonar), and 99% of their updates are internet-security related, usually.
To clarify, I'm not really looking for a solution to this particular crash on this posting. It only only happened once; I have had 6 crashes, but only one with that message. I just wanted to document the experiences on the forum, in case anyone else has the same thing.

I would highly recommend installing the quick fix. I had problems with initial X2 install, but had not suffered any of the problems listed on the quick fix page. A member of Cake Staff suggested installing it anyway, and since then it's been rock solid. And if you're looking for a definition of "improper argument", hang around this forum, it's full of them.. I "encounter" them daily.

And again I strongly recommend windows update probably more than the quickfix. There are loads of stability improvements that could effect Sonar esp with this sort of crash. Backup then update.

You should have error reports for all of them. Perhaps you can spot a common process other than sonar in the reports. Could be driver conflicts with graphics for instance or as stated before plugin conflicts. The invalid arguement message usually indicates that something related to the prior version of Sonar has been called for and X2 does that differently, <-- ( in Short ). ie, when an action is requested that is in the data of the project data that relates to the old version. When transferring projects to newer versions this can happen if there are active plugins when you transfer.
