"Everyone knows rock n' roll attained perfection in 1974. It's a scientific fact."
Homer Simpson claims "Rock and Roll obtained perfection in 1974" Taking the definition of Rock and Roll at its very broadest here is a list of some notable albums from 1974. Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell Crime of the Century - Supertramp Diamond Dogs - David Bowie Hero and Heroine - The Strawbs I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight - Richard and Linda Thompson It's Only Rock and Roll - The Rolling Stones Kansas -Kansas The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis Like an Old Fashioned Waltz - Sandy Denny The Man in a Bowler Hat - Stackridge On The Beach - Neil Young. Pretzel Logic - Steely Dan Red - King Crimson Relayer - Yes Sneaking Sally Through the Alley - Robert Palmer Starless and Bible Black - King Crimson Stormbringer - Deep Purple Turn of the Cards - Renaissance Veedon Fleece - Van Morrison War Child - Jethro Tull There is some great stuff in there but I can't help thinking Homer may have over shot be a year.

Back in the 70's I never thought I'd look back fondly at that decade. Who Knew?

I checked to make sure Diamond Dogs was on it, and then agreed that Homer was right. Besides, that was the year i was born... I was rock 'n' roll once.

Twigman Define Rock and Roll My favourite albums of all time were mostly released after 1974 As for the first question - You first I have taken the broadest definition imaginable, then stretched it a bit. We will all have different opinions on this but my heyday was the period that started with "In the Court of the Crimson King" and ended with "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" (it probably ended a before that but the Pistols brought home it was all over). So Homer's preposterous claim has some resonance but I decided to look and see what was released in 1974. And when I do I there were better years, IMHO. Some of the great prog band were already running out of ideas and it would not be long before they were simply fulfilling their contractual obligations while the new wave set to pounce. I think 1974 is too late - here is the case for 1973 Back in '72 - Bob Seger GP - Gram Parsons Who Do We Think We Are - Deep Purple Solid Air - John Martyn Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin Aladdin Sane - David Bowie Catch a Fire - Bob Marley and the Wailers Desperado - The Eagles There Goes Rhymin' Simon - Paul Simon Queen - Queen Tres Hombres - ZZ Top Count Down to Extacy - Steely Dan (pronounced 'leh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)- Lynyrd Skynyrd Bedside Manners are Extra - Greenslade Hard Nose to the Highway - Van Morrison Vagabonds of the Western World - Thin Lizzie Selling England by the Pound - Genesis Quadrophenia - The Who Brain Salad Surgery - ELP Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes Drift Away - Dobie Grey

maybe i'd vote for 1970 but there's a reason everything is relevant to it's surroundings, know what i mean? this was the year, coming off of 1969, which in my mind, was the end of the 'flower power' movement.... still smack dab in the middle of the vietnam war, the music, production, and attitude, of all the music that came out in '70 seemed to be more 'angst' and piss and vinegar, a reaction to the times, and to me, that's rock and roll.

I'm just realizing that most of the stuff I dug from the 70's was actually very early stuff. I tend to forget and to think of them as a relatively good decade, but it's really only the first 2 or 3 years. All the classics I mean. After that, circa 74, they at least become fewer in numbers. But since all those cool bands like Zep and Sabbath kept on touring, I tend to forget that from 74-75 onward, it really wasn't all that exciting.

I could easily pick out favorites from any decade, including the most recent one. But the pickings had started to thin by around 1976-1977. I think the 1990's were a good period because that decade represents the apex of recording quality. Speaking purely from a technical standpoint. I was just today listening to Shadow of the Moon by Blackmore's Night, released in the late 90's IIRC, and thinking "what a great recording!" But I have to agree that In the Court of the Crimson King was a watershed moment. There are just a few albums that had such a profound impact on me that I still remember where I was, who I was with and what I was doing the very first time I heard them: Court of the Crimson King Are You Experienced? Magical Mystery Tour Sgt Pepper Dark Side of the Moon Tommy This does not include all the records I heard first on acid. Those are electrochemically seared into my brain, but aren't necessarily the greatest works of art (e.g. the first Sabbath song I ever heard was "Iron Man", while peaking on blotter and staring at a pizza and wondering why I had ordered it and what I was going to do with it).
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

there is no questions that music in 70's was the best weather you like it o not. Even rapers now are stealing phrases from those songs. Anyway rock is dead completely nowadays.

I'm 50 yrs old... and I'm very glad I cut my teeth on all the early and mid 70's music. What I used to call classical / progressive rock was and still is some of the best music ever written IMHO. Disco, glitter and early punk gave me something to rant against, but even now I can still fully appreciate the analogue recordings of the day. Great stuff.

1983 - 1986 was the Indian Summer of my youth, I was living and working in Holland and having a ball, this may have influenced my view of the music of this period, but here are some albums that stood out for me. But the picks are thinner and with a few exceptions the classics less classic.
