"General Error" dialog box after saving!

I have been getting "General Error" (very helpful) a lot lately when saving and it's making me very nervous.
I have got used to saving my work a lot after Melodyne was causing crashes so I have stopped using it.

However, I still save quite regularly but when this happens I effectively lose everything from the previous time I saved my work.
I then have to exit without saving, reload Sonar and then reload the last save and redo the lost work.

Is anyone else seeing this?
I am on the second update of SONAR 2016.9.

Thanks
ZT

Hi. Maybe try to install the latest early access release?
http://forum.cakewalk.com/The-Early-Access-Program-is-Now-Live-for-the-Upcoming-Release-of-SONAR-201610-m3501363.aspx
If that does not work, come back and let us know what your project consists of (Audio, Vst, plugins etc.).
All the best.

I used to get this now and again, but as far as I can tell, it did not have any adverse effect on any of my projects.

I think it's safe to ignore it.

I have seen this. My work around is to press 'play' for the project.
After a few seconds of audio I stop and then save without seeing the 'general error' message.
I suspicion playing the project resets something....but have no clue what.

Thanks klos, I will give that a try when it happens.

Bristol, yes safe to ignore but I am still losing work (unless klos's workaround does the trick).

Zarqq, I will try the latest update and come back here if it's no better. I was using quite a few plugins so maybe related to one of them.

Thanks for the help,

I get this now and then. I have found that if you wait for a while (say 5-10 minutes), it'll let you save without the error.

I run into this quite frequently too. I agree with the "hitting play" thing mentioned above. It does seem to work. Also, make sure you just let things settle a minute or so before saving. Like if you do any major editing or bouncing, etc. Sometimes I catch myself hitting save right after I make some sort of adjustment. I think Sonar is still processing the edit or whatever, and it can't handle saving at the same time.

I've also noticed I have this problem while closing a project. But if I wait a minute or two before closing (and hit play/stop), it seems to close ok. Fortunately when this happens during closing, I don't lose any work because I've saved prior.

I've also learned to let my computer sit for a couple minutes after booting before opening a project. Turn it on, go grab a beer or something, then come back 10 minutes later when the computer is fully booted and ready to go. Starting early always caused me problems.

I get it very rarely, but have yet to figure out what causes it. It used to freak me out ("Oh no!! A General Error!!) until I found that hitting Play de-fanged it.

I have seen this occasionally of late as well. Apart from making me a little nervous it doesn't seem to affect the project though - I just resave.

What  don't understand is why ZT says he has lost work through this:

"I still save quite regularly but when this happens I effectively lose everything from the previous time I saved my work."

The only times I have ever seen this message is right after a [successful] save. More information required I think

I've gotten this error for 1.5 years ever since I got my new computer with Win 8.1. This never happened with Win 7 and my old Layla sound card It still happens sometimes with Win 10. It happened a lot more with 32 bit projects.

Right now I only have 1 32 bit project left that's active and even very recently I've gotten it a few times. I quickly hit the spacebar 2x to start and stop. Hit save and it always works fine. Never lost a thing. It's pretty harmless if you use the spacebar method.

Had this "General Error" just now with the latest Update [23.4.0 BUILD 38].

I couldn´t save nor save as. It always showed "General Error" and didn´t save at all.
The "Play-Button" method didn´t work for me but I could eventually save my project with "save copy as...". :-)

It's been a long time since I've seen the general error, yet I did see 1 so far with 2017.04 which I very recently updated to. I hope this thing hasn't come back. I hit save a 2nd time and it worked. I didn't have to use the play button method

Re: "General Error" dialog box after saving! 2017/05/12 13:24:32 (permalink)
its possible you can not over write the file because a process is still running (a plug in is my guess).
But creating a new "Save as" isn't over writing anything so it saves no problems.
I would check my plug ins to see if some type of process is running in them.

I have seen plug ins dirty projects just by simply being there.
