"Hallelujah" (L. Cohen cover)

Hello my friends! I would appreciate a listen and input on this one - a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" done with my friend Heath on vocals. We tried to put our own flavor on it, but I'd say it's more like the Buckley version than the Cohen version. We were going for a pretty stripped down, "live in the studio" type vibe - not overly polished.

Hi Dave , that's purdy. If I would go looking for something to moan about, it would be the strummed acoustic , sounds a bit ordinary, would like to hear some fingerpicking but as I said it's purdy as is.

Thanks "dirtyharry" - I'm glad you liked it!

Rik - I  hear ya; that's the way I was hearing it too. Unfortunately I have limited guitar skills (I'm mainly a bass player). I'm pretty much just a strummer on the acoustic, so I added the arpeggiated clean electric to try to spice it up a bit.

this is not the easiets song to cover, Dave.  I have heard more people attempt this tune on Idol and other shows than any one tune.  You guys really pulled it off.  You sound great and the singer is wonderful.

Nicely sung!  The guitar was also nicely recorded.  Overall a very nice simple acoustic track.  However, it may be dated to other people.  If you want to pursue the popularity route, you may need to add more "production."

Thanks Mark (C) - I appreciate the listen and positive feedback!

Yeah Warren, when we decided to record this my main concern was hoping it didn't sound cheesy - there are so many covers of this and it's the type of song you can put your own signature on, but it can also be easily butchered. I'm glad it got your approval!

Vicente - I will probably do a full blown production of this at some point. But the simple instrumentation I think helps highlight Heath's awesome vocal performance.

Thanks Rick! It's funny cuz Heath only knew Rufus Wainwright's version; he had never heard the original or even Jeff Buckley's version. I was glad I suggested it to him because it really fits his vocal style.

I appreciate the kind words Mark (H) - glad you liked it!! Thanks for listening.

Have you ever heard kd lang do this?  It'll knock your socks off.

    I don't understand - I commented on this post!

I was trying to be funny about how many times this song has been "covered" but it must not have been very funny and got deleted!  ;-)

anyway - this is great stuff, Dave!  love the simple guitar and vocals!  very nicely recorded and mixed as well!

Always loved this one, he does a pretty good job too. There is only one thing that could make this better? The occlusion of an Am. While it is included, it is not occluded, and therefore protruded.

Man, has he got a great voice.  This is just beautiful!  :)

And let me give a small challenge...learn to pick the guitar too.  That, coming from a grandma who's now playing bass and drums in church, having just learned this year.  IOW, if I can learn new skills late in the game, anyone can! :)

With a million apologies to Dave... Scotty, it's on my sound click. Did it in a night for a friend who was having some issues and she wanted to hear it. It gets too hot in a few places and the piano isnt great, but she didn't care. I did some Alternste verses, if I remember correctly. If anyone wants to comment please pm me so as not to derail the nice man's thread and his lovely rendition... http://www.soundclick.com...=9627929&q=hi&newref=1

Wow, Dave and Heath. Very nice collaboration. I'm not sure if adding fingerpicking would really add much since the tone of the guitar really just wants to sing out with the broken chords that you are all ready strumming so nicely.

BTW, Julianna, your version is beautifully sung as well. (I'm sure Dave wouldn't mind a slight hijacking here)

    Hey Dave,
What you call a stripped down recording, is harder to do then full blown production IMO. You really have this acoustic one on one vibe down to a science. The verb/plate you use really gives it a warm personal feel. It really sounds FANTASTIC on my end. Love everything about this tune form the performance to the mix, KUDOS!

    Thanks Scott!

Yeah Janet I can do a little pickin' but it's more boring than my strumming. I didn't play too much acoustic until last year when I got my Taylor and really have figured out it's a different animal than an electric. I now play by acoustic more than my electric and definitely plan on working more on finger picking.

Oh Julianna you can hijack my thread any day my dear!

Kev I definitley agree with you that these types of recordings are hard - the recordings with an acoustic and one voice don't leave much room for error! It can also be difficult to have cover a wide spectrum with only one instrument.

    Thanks Phil!

Yo Tap! Well I like the strummed sound and I'm glad you do too! I agree with others though that I need to keep pushing myself on my guitar playing.

Thanks John - one of the things I love about Heath's voice is not just the wonderful tone but most of all of the delivery - he really does sell the lyrics and sing with conviction.

Thanks again all!! Next week I have a new one I'll be posting that is my first (completed) original song in a while that Heath is also singing. Stay tuned!

Well..I've never heard the original before Dave, but, I'm still stuck on 'Amazing Grace'..

Yer buddy certainly has an excellent voice and you know I love productions that have a bit of a 'live' feel to them.

Sometimes to much polish takes away the intimacy from the music.

Did you record the acoustic and vox serperately, or do it the 'right way'??

FWIW..I can't finger-pick to save my life man..I'm too much of a klutz, no matter how hard I've tried to learn that style.

Anyways..I like and it sounds good!

Thank you Mr. Hansen! Well I did it the "wrong" way. I agree tracking the guitar and vocals together would have been ideal, but when I try to do too many things at once I end up screwing it up!

Have to confess Dave, I'm not a fan of Cohen or this song, but I forced myself!

Excellent version I must admit, very convincing vocal and a nice simple, open mix. Good stuff.
