"In the studio" videos on Youtube (or elsewhere)
Does anyone watch behind-the-scenes videos to learn how the pros record? If so, what are some good clips? Here's an interesting one I found... Michael Jackson in the studio What's interesting is he seems to be double/triple/quadruple-tracking the vocals, but it's so seamless I never noticed it. Also interesting is the way the engineer has him sing the part from different distances: close 8", then back 2-3ft, then really far back 4-5ft. Does anyone use that technique? Are there any other good vids out there (not just vocals either)?

There was a DVD that came out with Dream Theater's disc, Systematic Chaos. It is all studio footage from every song on the disc. It is fun, funny and interesting. It doesn't get technical on recording but it lets you see them working which is pretty dang cool.

Thanks for telling me! That's officially on my wish list now Even more than learning tech tips, I like watching musicians in the studio especially full bands because there's a cool energy to it that inspires me. Depeche Mode has been posting video blogs of their latest studio sessions, and even though I'm not a huge DM fan, it's fun to watch & drool over the gear & flashing lights.

Not sure but maybe billy idol? whoever it is is singing "plastic Jesus" and I know Idol recorded that song in 2005 and it kind of looks like him, but I don't know for sure. I don't know of any times that AP worked on Idol's records, but I could be wrong about that.

Go here. Buy these. http://techbreakfast.com/dvd/ http://techbreakfast.com/dvd2/ For the download price, these are the best I have seen and I own the Make It Like A Record, Mix Like The Pros, Russ Long and Shaun Wilson DVDs as well. Tony spells it out from A-Z. Russ Long's is very good for showing how to track but it doesn't get enough into his thinking about how to approach setting the gear the way he does. Shaun's DVD is very good but very long but most of us don't own an MCI mixing console (I think that's what he has) to get the sound. His is about the psychology of making changes to a mix. The reason I like Tony's approach is he uses ProTools and mixes with a hybrid approach i.e. plug ins and some external buss hardware which he covers. That is most like the majority of us are dealing with in this day and age. His information is very adaptable to Sonar. Hope this mini review is helpful. You might also try the Universal Audio site, there are a lot of free videos to watch which show how they set up their plug ins for various tracking and mixing tasks. There is one that shows you how to take the digital edge out of mixing in the box. Don't want to be a spoiler but two plugins on the master buss, set the way they reccomend, and you have a much warmer and richer mix sound. That video was invaluable to improving my mixes.

Jem Godfrey, the man behind English prog band Frost* documented the making of their latest album "Experiments in Mass Appeal". All of the videos can be found at http://www.youtube.com/planetfrost. They are most entertaining as well as being informative.

hairyjamie One for John Mayer fans , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiG-YRUcMds Not so much studio techniques but interesting nonetheless. I watched this a lot when it first came out. I don't know if the appeal comes from John Mayer so much as as it looks like they're having a lot of fun. I'm not a huge John Mayer fan, I find his songs to be cheesy, but I do get the impression that he really cares about music and guitar playing and it comes through in this video.

The album "The Alan Parsons Project" continues to this day to be among my top 3 favorite listens of all time. I can't wait for this new one to come out. Talk about getting inspired, I also really enjoyed this link.
