Enormously enjoyable.  Were the flute and sax samples? wow.  Only crit if there is one is to change up the drums a little here and there.

Tom, I never know what to expect from you, and this is no exception.  It does give one a sense of Miles Davis but with more polish.  You're one of the most creatively diverse writers on this forum.  Keep up the good work!!

All the best,
Lynn

Tom
I like the bass line hanging things together. It stands out well without being intrusive.
The horn starting just after 4:00 is outstanding. Really like that. I listened to the track several times noticing nice little interacting bits here and there. Overall a very enjoyable listen. Never did figure out why Tom is getting all metric with the title.

Tom,

Great track. I can only wish I had the technical skill to cook up something this polished.

It sounds like your inspiration are those splendid extended one chord instrumental tracks Miles did when he first went electric- i.e In a Silent Way. A difference I'm hearing is the bass part- I remember a more simple bass line that held down the groove. Nonetheless, I like the part you composed. And the keyboards are lot more up front. It may not be possible to emulate Tony Williams with a drum machine. (These observations could be totally meaningless in terms of what you are trying to do.)

Great stuff. Keep it coming.

Clearly you have a good Miles tone in the to start, but I think you have captured his phrasing and notes choice really well, and that captures his playing spirit.

Nice track

Very cool tune - that was fun to listen to.  I was hooked early on and the keyboard that comes in around 3:50 sounded excellent. Overall an impressive jazz mix.

This is awesome. Loved the ethereal beginning, and then it transcended into something funky and completely different. I don't have any mix critiques. I thought the mix was great. I wouldn't change a thing!

Thanks y'all!

Eph and Supareels, the more I listen I too hear drum spots that stick out, so I will retame them and switch it up a bit. Thanks for the crit there.

Jymez, Daryl, and Bapu - thanks, glad you liked it, your guys' work is tops so I appreciate the kind words.

Lynn, takes one to know one. Much obliged.

Bjorn, I appreciate how careful you listen and catch things. My next song might be called "Kilometers Standish."  :)

OK Bert! You clearly have read some liner notes and know your Miles!!! I was perhaps blessed not to know as much. To tell the truth, I'm not and never really have been a Miles Davis fan. I love jazz, too, and he's clearly a great player. I appreciate him much more after having worked on this song.

The only reason I came up with this is the muted horn patch in the Kontakt instrument Vintage Horns 2. It sounds okay but I accepted the challenge of getting it to sound decent in a mix. So it required a backup song which I just kinda wrote around the horn patch. Turns out you can't just compress a muted horn patch like you want to, it makes the transient attacks sound super weird . . .

Thanks Bert for the kind comments! The basic chords in the beginning you might recognize as "All Blues" and "Freddie Freeloader" kinda mashed together.  :)

Kamikaze, thanks! I really was trying for some Miles phrasing as I played the keys, or at least my understanding of what he might do, channeling himself,  27? years after his death, through a middle aged guy who wasn't that familiar with his music, or at all with heroin.  :)   I've actually checked out more of his music now, and I'd say he's pretty badass. Great player.

Doug, many thanks! The keyboard parts are just totally improv fun, much more in the comfort zone. It's the "Canterbury" kontakt instrument, which I highly recommend.

Leadfoot and Wookie, thanks much for the listen and glad you dug the groove. That's my favorite part, too, of almost any song.

Hi,
Something of TUTU's feel at the start then goes toward more " pop" groove, reminds me a bit of the Talking Heads here and there.
Sorry to compare, but it is my way to say that I like it.
Cheers.
Olivier.

Here's what I was reminded of:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQKt7DTKyJU

Miles' improvised/composed solos always seem to find a sweet spot in the head and he stays with it. He never turns a performance into a note playing contest. Zen, really. His 60's sax player Wayne Shorter played the same way. Still does.

Carry on,

Hi Tom,
Have been just listening to some tracks since yesterday after a long lazy hibernation from music making and checking in on forums.

This one from you is a cool groovy track I must say. Nothing much that I could notice in terms of the mix, all sounded quite good and reasonably well balanced to me. Loved the guitar sequence at the beginning.
Only thing I noticed is that there could have been more variations on the beats / rhythms. But still very cool as it is.

I don't know what that is either, but I like it.

I do hear the miles and giles thing, but with a new age synth thing.

Your music is always so polished.  You seem to take the time to get it right before you unleash it.  I stream jazz 24 for several hours a day, and this could easily be on there, no doubt, no question.

Nice work, and thank you.

Wow Tom, very good track here. Enjoyed it on my headphones and it translated beautifully clear. Are the guitars for OTS? They sounded very nice as did the bass. :)
The video fit very nicely with the instruments as well.
