"Only For You" - my first dance track

This started out just playing with Z32a+2.1 and then before long I created my first dance song.  I just saw the Moody Blues in concert and this has just a taste of them along with maybe Depeche Mode or A-ha influence.

Not sure because I don't usually write in this genre but it was fun.  I added the rock guitars 'cause that's what I heard in my head.

All comments welcome.

your voice and the rock guitars suit well with the electro outfit! but I have to say, this is not really a dance song, but more of a pop song with heavy eighties influences, so your depeche mode / a-ha influences seem to be right. This is even reminding me a bit of John Parrs St. Elmo's Fire. So bring back the good times!

John - thanks for the listen and nice comment.

Tom - Much thanks for the comments.  I called it dance for the sequencer and looped drum samples with a "4 on the floor" kick pattern.  It then departs from there so I don't mind whatever it should be called.  Thanks for compliments.

Definitely brings back memories of Depeche Mode.  Except for the American accent. ;)  Drums and bass are definitely "dancy", but the lyrics and vocals are more "ballady".  Regardless, very nicely done Jimmy!

I really like this Jimmy - it has a New Order vibe for me with the geetars.
Only crit would be to back off the reverb on the vocal - it gets a bit muddy in a couple of spots

Perfect.  The bottom is a little thick for rock, but for a dance ballad :) it works well.

    Hey, Jimmy,

Cool dance style 80's pop-rock fusion with a nice fun vibe and strong punchy rhythm!

Sort of reminds me of Human League, only with nice power guitars and (IMO) better vocals.

Nice clean mix, too, great stuff, Jimmy!

The Equator D5s are supposed to be really great monitors.  Do you find you miss some low end sometimes, mixing with 5" speakers?  Do you have a concern about the faithfulness of your D5s?

I listen through Tannoy 501a monitors, with a KRK V12s subwoofer, and they're run via a dbx DriveRack Studio management unit, which serves as a crossover, as well as a "room EQ compensator".  At setup, I used the DriveRack to "pink the room", so (theoretically) at my listening position (i.e. where I placed the DriveRack RTA mic) the sound output is exactly what the sound input was, since the DriveRack cycled through each frequency range (and there are 28 of them!) and dynamically adjusted each one until the room was deemed "flat".  It looks pretty slick on paper, but it's hard to know what you're actually hearing too much or too little of, until someone in a different listening environment tells you.  So far I've not been made aware of any problems in my listening setup.

Anyway, I think your mix sounded great here. :)

Very cool tune.  It's amazing what happens when you use a new synth and try something a bit out of your normal area.

On the mix, I hear lots of mids, not in a bad way but there is not as much low end as I would expect in a "dance tune" with 4 on the floor. Also, the vox IMHO could stand a bit of sparkle and shine.

This is one of the better tunes I have heard you do. Good job on the writing too. This genre seems to be a good fit for you.... well I mean.... you pulled it off nicely.

Thanks again.  I need a subwoofer to add to my D5's.  They are truly awesome monitors but for very low frequencies, they need some help.  They are far better than the NS10's I used for decades.  One thing I love about this forum is that we can give good feedback on our mixes, effects and EQ.  I need that because being a lone gun, it can be hard to stay objective after listening to a song a hundred and one times!  I am sure everyone knows what I mean.

    Hi Herb,

Thanks for the listen and good comments.  I agree with the vox could use some sparkle and shine.  I went back to my SM58 and though it is smoother than my cheap B1 condenser, I lost some mids that I was used to.  I was boosting mids and some highs and then had to edit the sibilance manually in Melodyne to tame those peaks.  Next time, I may go back to my Shure SH55 which I used a lot on my blues stuff.

Thanks also for the writing.  I may write another in this genre.  I used a different vocal approach and it is growing on me.

    Life is good.

Hi Jimmy, I really enjoyed this song from you.  Your performances and writing are terrific.  The only suggestion I have would be to punch up the instruments a bit to match the vocal.  Leave the vocal volume where it is and still allow it to be a few db's above the instruments.  I think that would further make this danceable and would enhance the fine beats.  Best to you!

    Hi Lynn,

I much appreciated your comments.  I will try your suggestion and see where it goes.  I keep feeling the bass instrument is not clear enough so I might push that up or EQ a bit there.  Thanks again.

    Jimmy

I tried to listen to this yesterday, but SoundClod wouldn't play for me... it worked today just fine...
This is a solid track... great vocal & harmony... good mix, not crazy about the verb on the vox though... I think more of a rhythmic slapback might fit better... Guitars could come out front just a bit... Excellent work Jimmy...

    Jimmy,

Really good job, really enjoyed this track from performance to songwriting.  Vox is a little muddy, I think as Frank mentioned, a slap back delay might work better to clean up the Vox muddiness...   Very solid performance.  Big fan of 80's music and this piece definitely captured that era...

The other thing you might try with your current verb, assuming you are sending to a Verb Bus.   Try placing an EQ directly in front of the Reverb Plug and Hi-Pass at 600Hz and Low-Pass at 10kHz.   Learned this from a Bobby Owsinski article, see below.    I use it on guitars and other instruments as well with the same settings.  It really does wonders for cleaning up muddy reverb.

    Hi Frank,
I just saw your post.  Thank you for your nice comments.  I have a little bit of delay on the lead vocal but was not thrilled with the reverb.  I will pay closer attention to that in the future.  I am so glad you liked it!

    Hi Mark,

Much thanks for the listen and comments!  I forgot about the pre-verb EQ technique.  I will definitely work on that one!  Thanks for the article line too.

this would be almost post new wave / electronic music vibe...
i'd try mixing this with NO reverb on the vocal
    mix is bit bass heavy
    great performances
