"Project was changed" asterisk appears for no reason
Sorry, I know this has already been discussed because i remember reading a thread about it a while ago, but the search function isn't really useful. Ever since I installed Expanded, the asterisk that denotes a change in the project appears next to the project name although i hadn't done anything since i last saved that would cause it to. It's even already there as soon as any project is first opened. Has anybody found out a cause or is it fixable? Thanks

I've seen this. I assumed because I changed where the now time cursor is by hitting play, that the project is changed because I am not in the same location. It does seem odd in that I have also not noticed it till expanded. What say the rest of you?

I say I noticed this as well but without changing anything and just hitting PLAY causes the asterisk appear for me... I chalked it up to some track automation. Jim

Thanks If you have any controllers sending data, intentional or not, that would cause that, amongst other possibilities. I've had a bad cable on a foot controller do that, for example.

Simply calling up another screenset will also popup the "save me" star.

I see that on some rev8 projects- going directly from save to asterisk. Stopping the audio engine first works here. Don't know why.

Hi ba midi, not using any controllers other than the vstudio100 for basic transport controls and fader automation. The usb cable should be ok, no problems otherwise. Never had this happen before Expanded (a month ago). Thanks all. ----------- What's really odd is that the asterisk is present as soon as the projects loads up.

M@B yep I've seen this several times. Most of the time, this happens with a 3rd party plugin. Try opening the project and closing a few plugs, resave the project with a new name and then open and see how you fair. I'm a beta tester for a few software companies. When I run the beta versions of plugs, I sometimes get the * due to a plug that isn't quite talking to Sonar too well. Other times, the software itself may be a beta and that can bring this on. But 9 times out of 10, every time but once, this issue was due to a 3rd party plug. Some free plugs can cause this, some cracked plugs (no I'm not accsuing you of using cracks lol) can cause this and sometimes I've even seen it with extreme automation going on to where that automation used with a plug can cause it. You don't even have to do anything, right? You open the project and bang...the * appears and you didn't do a thing. You should also notice when a project does this, it takes a little more time to load than those that don't. That's usually the instant give-away for me that something within the project is not right. Most of my projects, no matter how large they are, open in about 3-6 seconds. Anything longer than that and I know something is hanging somewhere. I'm working on a plug with Acme Bar Gig right now that is giving me this issue. The reason is because it's still a beta and the code is not totally finished. We know what the issue is we just haven't gotten to fixing it yet. But try killing some plugs, resaving and see if that fixes it. At least you'll know what's causing it. Good luck. -Danny

How about this: if a project from an older build is opened in a newer build, such as X1C to X1 expanded, the data may need to be rearranged, so it is already considered "modified".

Some effects can trigger it, ones with lots of feedback and some others that do realtime graphing. Also, I use a track for reference in each project which has input monitoring on, that will trigger the asterisk even without any change. I look at the false alarm asterisk as a reminder to hit ctrl-s periodically.

I bet I know exactly what's causing it. I noticed it too after installing Expanded when using the "playlist" feature. It's the "Softube Saturation Knob" module that was included in "Expanded". If it exists in the Prochannel of any track, it causes this (whether it's on or off). Remove it from the Prochannel and watch the asterisk go away. At least in my case when using the playlist, as soon as each song loaded, the asterisk appeared causing the loaded songs to stack up and bog down the computer in a "live" setting.

Thanks for all replies. I checked out what Cody suggested by opening a pre-Expanded project that obviously had no instances of the SofTube Saturation module and it opened with no asterisk. I inserted an instance of ST Sat and the asterisk appeared as expected, i then saved and the * went away. I then closed the project and reopened it to find the asterisk already there. So it seems that Cody is right, the PC SofTube Saturation appears to cause the *. --------------- EDIT: Danny's idea of a 3rd party plugin being the culprit appears to be true enough as well, even though the 3rd party plug, in this case, is integrated into the 1st party's software.

Just an fyi, I have SoftTube Saturation inserted on tracks in my normal template (I inserted it and resaved my template after getting Expanded) and I don't have the asterisk problem. But maybe it's interacting with some other plugin in your template, or maybe it's OS specific or something.

After creating a new project, as of now, the behavior described in post #13 is not happening, so I'm back to not having a prime suspect. I think I'm going to have to go through the plugins one at a time as Danny suggested above until I can put my finger on what's causing this. I suspect it's a combination of things and/or plugins. Though due to what I described in post 13, I feel that the PC ST module will be part of the recipe.

Yah for me it's always 3rd party stuff...especially ones with modulations going on. It's no big deal really.

I can't say what it is for sure right now other than it surely wasn't happening before Expanded and that the PC ST module definitely was involved in it happening earlier. I agree it's not a BIG deal, but it is a little distracting when it appears and you have to wonder about what you may have done without realizing it and do you want to save that into the project.

Totally feel your pain M @ B. Yeah it's most likely a plug somewhere. Now on my end, no issues with SofTube at all. It's just one of those things where you'll need to do a process of elimination and just keep a little log file of what you try. Keep me posted on this though because I'd like to try and make it happen on my end to see if I can reproduce it. Good luck. :) -Danny
