"Rap" Hard Rock/Rap
Hi All With the risk of loosing all of you, here is something different. It is a hardrock/rap piece with a touch of funk. I have been working on it for a while and I still not happy with it and with my rap voice. Maybe someone could loan me his voice? Working on this piece for a while I tend to loose objectivity, so please give me some tips and pointers. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=9841718&q=hi&newref=1 Thanks

I really like this. This has some real potential. The vocals work really well, maybe crisp them up a bit and take the guitar down just a smidgen ... and funk up the bass, (give it a little top end). I can't remember the last time I heard a rocking guitar lead on a rap song ... Rappers should do it more often!!!

Okay when I first saw this, I figured it had to read it wrong. Vicente doing rap??!! Actually this works really well - more like punk rap. I like the vocals the way they are, except maybe add some ad-lib stuff towards the end. You could consider some "breakdown" sections on the arrangement of the instruments - like have a couple of measures with just the beat and choppy palm-mute guitar, for example. Or everything drops out for a bass fill, etc. But it's off to a great start!

Wow I wouldn`t call this Rap Rock...Makes me feel like it should be PUNKFUNKROCK...It`s cool, and your voice has more of a punk feel to it and I like it.

Hi All Tap I just uploaded a new version with the eq changes. Dave that is a cool suggestion. Let me play with it and find the right spot for it. Alkie thanks for listening and for liking it. Rockinrobby I have posted the lyrics in the song page. It is a poem from the 1830s. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9841718

hey vincent - this is not bad! the vocals are being overpowered by the electric guitar and bass in some places. you've also got a lot of sibilance in the vox. good stuff

love the instrumentation vechung, and would second the guys, vox is drowned a little and would defo include a break down section with just a beat, a few bass line hits and some light funky rythm guitar. Good job.

Huh ? Did I read that right ? These were the first thoughts in my head when I saw this thread. Umm, ep, that's what it says - so being a fan of both your playing and unlikely combinations I just had to listen immediately. First off, hats off to you for even attempting it and then I have to put my hat back on and take it off to you again for not only doing it but succeeding. Only listening on laptop, so can't really comment on the mix too much, but overall I'd say that the vocals need to be further forward - they seem kind of lost in places. In terms of composition, I really like it on the whole but I think it could maybe use a break here and there where most of the instruments drop out and add emphasiss to the vocal line and maybe a repeat of the odd vocal line in the outro. Other than that, you rock Vicente - very cool !

That sounds Great!! It's got a raw feel to it with the distorted guitars and phat snare sound. Really nice mix too. I like how you've EQ's the bass - you can hear that nice "clack" and it is a clean bass which works well with the guitar and the kick. The rythm of your rapping vocals works very well! Nice job.

Vox are overpowered, as mentioned prior, which makes it difficult to hear the words. Sounds good though. I agree with Cian that a breakdown would add a nice effect. A ToneLoc breakdown with a little light funky guitar would be cool. Regards

again, as with the others, not sure what to expect...not rap at all, but the music is very cool! needs a changeup somewhere, and you need to really get the timing of your words very tight with the drums for maximum impact. i know some of the peeps in this field use a triple-tracked approach to vocals for max impact. odd but good!

All Ok let me adjust the voice up but not too much. My thinking was that this is a loud piece and the voice needs to be a bit drowed out by the instruments, almost like shouting to get over the top. So looks like I over did it. I think the break down is a great idea. How come I did not think of it?? Oh well, working on it and it should be coming shortly. guitartrek For the bass eq, I got this from a book that recommends bosting 10-12K to give it some punch. mgh Triple track approach? How is that done?

Nice to see you step out of the norm and even better when it all comes together and works. From the way the vox sits in the mix to the performace itself this was WORKING. Really enjoyed everything about this piece and the mix sounds great on my end. KUDOS! Kev

mgh, That would capture the dynamics better as you could put different mics at different levels. There must be lots of tweaking to get the mix right. I can see how that would make more vox impact. All (Rik, Kev and NoHow recently) thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I just updated the track with the vox up and I added a breakdown section.

Well Vicente, this was a very ambitious undertaking. Rapping is not as easy as it seems. I agree with the others who were looking for the vocals to be up front more. On the whole it works really well, and your playing is great, as always. Depending on where you want to lean with the song some ideas that MIGHT help- Consider slowing the tempo if you want it to be more rap-like. That will make the phrasing easier. If you're leaning punk, then it's fine where it is. The percussion has sort of a funk/punk feel to it. If you want to go the rap route, I'd suggest some different kit pieces, and less cymbals. So, those are just some thoughts. More than anything I respect you for stepping outside your musical comfort zone and experimenting.

Philz I am leaning more to punk. I would have like something like POD doing funk, but I can't scream. Thanks for the comments Dave Glad you like the changes and thanks for the suggestions.

A little out of my 'comfort zone' with this Vicente, but, I love the guitar (reminded me of some 60's, early 70's playing) and bass work!
