"Tattoo" - new Van Halen single w/ DLR
Is it just me, or is it completely horrible? So disappointed... What a lame chorus. I was expecting them to start chanting "da plane! da plane!"...

I'm a big fan of Van Halen (especially Eddie) and have to agree with you on the chorus being really lame. Michael Anthony is definitely missed with his backup harmonies. However, I do like the rest of the song (somewhat similar style to DLR's solo albums).

Huge Van Halen fan back in the day but sorry, they just can't write a good song anymore to save their lives. While I loved Roth on the early stuff Sammy just spoiled all of us who like someone who can actually sing. I know that will likely spark a huge debate but there it is. Song sucks btw.

Wow, i had to shut it off 1/2 way through the song. I used to be a VH fan, but wish they'd stayed in the "where are they now" file. This is exactly what makes me worried for the upcoming Black Sabbath and Stone Roses reunions.

i thought this one was particularly cheesy. as in, cheddar, sharp, with a bit of mold on it. LOL but i'm a Van halen fan, in ANY configuration, and my guess is, they want to be real careful with the way they market this, and are probably playing SUPER SAFE with the first public showings: i.e. too smooth production. lots of smooth rhythm guitars in the background, low-mixed soloing going on throughout. the thing they did so well, back in the early days, first 5 albums, was the RAWNESS of the live studio action. that's where the magic is. this thing, is just produced like a modern pop rock thing, and that's not why people fell in love with the original van halen. i hope the rest of the album, tries to let go of the reins, and just goes for it. if it's all like this, i'll probably pass.

With much respect to VH I'd have to say, not feeling this one. The music is just ok and the lyrics are awful.

Alex didn't seem to be aggressive enough to me. A bit surprised at the drumming. Eddie was Eddie. Nothing new or groundbreaking from him here, but he's still Eddie. Wolfie is along for the ride. Dave is still Dave - not a great singer, but he does what he does. But overall it seemed more like a cookie cutter attempt to put together a typical VH song than the wild and inspired ride that the original incarnation had. Not terrible, but not particularly interesting either. And no better or worse that any number of other classic bands when they try to recreate the magic. But back in the day there's no way in hell they would've made that video without a bunch of tattooed, bikini clad babes cavorting about. Just sayin'.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I read that most (if not all) of the "new" stuff is actually reworks of old songs that didn't make the cut on the early albums. Nothing wrong with that I guess. Seems odd though.

Now if the chorus was chanting "Bapu! Bapu!" instead of "Tattoo! Tattoo!", then it might be pretty kewl.

Hi, I just can't get into VH ... not sure why, but I really find that even folks like Strummy or Grant are far better guitarists and not as pretentious, doing some great work that they are not being recognized for. Sorry Mr. VH ... time to retire! And I think hearing that stooge sing about teacher one more time, is rather boring!
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Actually I thought that was about ten times better than I assumed it would be pre-judging by this thread.....Cool for them, it sounded confident and seasoned. Why wouldn't it? By the way I've never been a really big fan of VH...but I like when good groups do what they do best.

Well, I got the album yesterday and I've had a couple of listens through... It's pretty good actually, and nice to hear DLR back on vocals. To me, his voice is as much a part of Van Halen as the 'brown sound'. 8/10
