"The Forest" new arrangement and final mix 11/12/11

I've been revamping all my tunes, and experimenting with new techniques. I'm most proud of the vocal sound on this track, all done with a Shure SM57 into an old Onkyo tape deck!

Man, I don't know what's wrong.  It wouldn't play for me, Ron.  I'll try later!

Yeah, it hasn't worked on any of my songs on that page since I posted it...I'll bump it once the problem is resolved.

i'm using Opera as a browser and it played just fine for me.

The tune sounds good... nice punch, The vocals have a smooth distortion sound to them that is pleasant.  They are not crystal..... but in a good way..  I like the sound of them.

    Could it be the tape?

I might have to pull out my old 58 again and have a go with it.

Hey some nice guitar chops there....

    Very nice job.

Thanks...I signed up for soundcloud anyway too!

The guitar was my scratch track. I made up a foam gobo, and was doing my writing late into the evening while the kids were in bed. I had my little Champ on 2, playing my Tele into a MXR M80 bass DI. I cranked up the low-end to get a little more bass, and used the mxr's distortion. I ahd a 57 on the grille, and an AT4050 wrapped in foam inside the amp...total comb filtering and phase issues. I was going to re record the guitar until I solo'd the 57 and it sounded good enough. It's just the one guitar track with no doubling...little bit of delay to biggen it up.

Wonderful – original, rough and raw with elements of Buffalo Springfield , Gang of Four, and CSN (I know I am dating myself and you probably have no idea who these people are). Love the way the guitar drives this entire tune – it takes command and everything else gets in line. The hammering (guitar) around 2:44 is nice – effective without being over powering. Vocals are quite good. It’s all good. Terrific job on a super rock tune.

Great job working out the electric and acoustic parts. Guitar tones are realy good.  The throaty wah tone is a nice choice. The vox gave me an early Styx vibe for some reason. Very cool tune.

That's an interesting one. Reaching back there. Classic rock with a little funk tinge here and there. I like the wah part as well. I've a wah for so long but NEVER manage to get it into a song. Good overall song dynamics as well.

I just have a standard GCB-95 cry-baby, there is a ton of mods out there that can be done to it. I did a vocal mod (which narrows the q-band and focuses the mids a bit more...plus an output mod that juices up the output. I end up using it a lot for distortion. I can drive the pre-amp of the amp a lot harder with it. All I have to do is guitar-wah-amp, I put the thing in a fixed position for heavier parts quite a bit.

Yeh, that last bit is something that Mic Ronson used to do so much in Spiders from Mars. Just get the wah in a position that drives the amp in a particular was and emphasizes a particular range to cut through for that song and leave it there. You can create a very heavy, grinding tone that way as long as the position is conducive to the chords you are playing.

    Yay!  :)

Yeah, I think from now on I'll try to wait a month before I post anything, cause they never seem so wonderful a few weeks later.  Well, at least that's a goal (to wait)...I imagine I won't be able to wait that long.  lol
