Holy cow, this is crazy.  I love this song.  I like the way it is panned and the tones of the guitars are killer.  The way the intro leads into the main verse is very nice.  I wish that I had written this song.

    All the best,

Auto wah or manual wah?   Great groove.  Killer mix as always, I would love to see how you do it!

thanks man, i appreciate the review.
i did some hard panning on this one, to be sure....

this song kind of sums up my impression of the vegas strip when i first visited there, a couple of years ago.

kinda reminded me of mardi Gras, in New Orleans.
    LOL

    thanks for listening and commenting....

    the wah, is always manual!
    LOL--i wouldn 't know how to program a auto-wah.....
i like the feel of a way, it's very organic, and i can make it talk the way i hear it in my head...that was my very first 'effects pedal', a vox wah.
this wah, is a budda wah. it really records well.

    mix notes:

here are three screenshots i made last night.   (((right click and "open image in NEW TAB"--- to see it full size)))

the first, is an overview of the tracks (as many as i could cram on the screen, this mix had 32 tracks) and their automation.
as you can see, i also automate the master bus for volume rides. i mix my sections of the song louder and softer based on their functions...
chorus sections are always at 0db (my peak setting) and i'll bring it down a bit on versus and bridges.

the 2nd, shows my buss mix only.
just so happens, this song has the largest number of sub-busses i used on any of my mixes, total of 13.
the idea behind the busses, is to either provide overall control of eq or compression of groups of individual mic channels, to minimize memory issues, or to make the mix easier (say, one master eq on all guitar tracks, instead of eq on each individual track)..... or for routing of effects across sub busses...... or, more typically, to mix groups of mics with one fader, even if i automated the levels on the individual track level.

the 3rd shot, simply shows the overall final level of the final bounce. i send this bounce out of the DAW at 24 bit/44.1khz, for mastering in another program.
notice a total peak of -6.3 on the final bounce (track 33). lots of headroom there to play with for mastering.

Good Stuff!  Terrific performance, arrangement, and mix.  I love the story of the song too.  The changes at 1:10, 2:07, 3:00 really add a nice dimension to this number.
    Terrific job.

I never programmed an auto wah, I would just turn it on   I have a Budda Wah, but I don't use it as much as I would like to because I really dont' like how mine works, I think I have a bad pot (in the wah ).  I've adjusted it but it really cranks fast from lows to highs right at one point and it's hard to control.  I spent a bunch on it but it doesn't express the way I wanted it to.  But I still like wah because I'm an old hippie from the 60s.

Your levels are similar to what I run.  I've finally learned to record at lower levels and preserve my headroom.  I master my final with Ozone 4 at 24bit.

You get a great sound that's for sure.

Fantastic track Bats! Love the down & dirty feel with minimal percussion before it all kicks in. Sublime guitar tones and the whole arrangement/production is perfect.

My favourite bit has to be that breakdown riff at 2:02, that had me laughing out loud it was so cool.

thanks for listening..... and yes, i spent some time on this.
walked away, came back, several times.
it's good for perspective, but eventually you get to a point where you feel like your polishing it flat, and you have to just quit.
    this was my quitting point!
    Heheh

    freddy
glad you dig it freddy... those changes, yes, the turnarounds and switch ups are important, because in general, it's a pretty basic riff going on.
i want to change things up enough to make them interesting and avoid obvious cliches, at least that's what i'm aiming for.

    markno999
thanks, and glad you like it.
i figure, the screenshots tell a story almost easier than explaining things...
and it's only partly indicative of the way i 'typically' do things, i don't mind talking about the technical part of the recording, that's the reason i came to this site to begin with.
i've learned a lot here, but still have so much more to dig into.

    scotty
i appreciate the support SJ, i really do.

    daryl
autowah, i've had things like that, on my old POD Xt, for example..
but i like to move the thing.
funny you don't like the budda, but i totally understand about chosing a wah ...... it's very personal, and has to work to the way you use a wah, your personal approach and attack and feel. that's why there are so many on the market.
the other one i've use, that i thought was just stellar, was a AREA 51 wah.
maybe, you should look at the newer Joe Bonnamassa wah, it's tweakable, but more like a classic wah.

    gcolbert
the strip, haha, one of the first things that happened to me on the strip, was some illegal alien-type dude that spoke no english, came up to me and flashed a bunch of stripper and hooker 'free entrance' cards at me!
    LOL
that's what i refer to in the lyric, as the 'flickers', because of the manner that they flick the cards in your face, and hold them out in such a way that you feel compelled to take one.

    james
glad you dig it. there a lot going on in the mix, but i try to keep it coming and going in a way that's unobtrusive.
appreciate the listen, glad i got you to 'laugh out loud'.
    that's a good thing.

Nice work Bat. The production is stunning. The screen shots are great. Cool to see the way others work. Thanks.
You really use that L2..:) The C1 on the master. Why not Rcomp. Any BIG reason? Just curious. The C1 is one of those that I just don't go to. No particular reason, Just don't. Thanks for the reminder that it's there:)
And no EQ on the verbs. Interesting. Overall, has a great tight clean sound. Well done. Good luck with the CD.

that's part of the reason i wanted to post it here......

thanks man! i make you president!!

appreciate the listen and the 'good lucks'........
    the L2.
well, i use it AGGRESSIVELY on bass, and just barely kissing it on everything else.
i use it similarly to a 1176. and it can be super transparent, so yes, quite a few instances, but just barely working on some.
you'll see it from time to time on the master buss, it is not even registering on the L2 meters, but you can hear it changing the mix just a bit.
i mix into it from the beginning.
i do not track with it, only on mixdown.

i DO use the rennaisance comp quite a bit, but to my ears, it is really a 'COLOR' comp.
the C1 is very transparent, with the right settings.
on my master buss, it is set with a medium attack, medium release, and at about 1:25 ratio.
    very low, light settings.

the reverbs all have internally-set eq's, i prefer to get my rolloffs in the plugin, and not on the strip.
i think it sounds more natural that way.

    thanks!

i used the new (old) ibanez artist to re-do the electric rhythm guitar parts, made them more chunky.

i think i had used my strat the first time, but i was always looking for different guitar sounds throughout this thing, they all sound quite different to me, though i'm aware that to some folks, they probably all sound the same!
    LOL
    thanks man

Bat I am listening in my studio.  My faithfully Event 20/20's sit on isolation cones on sand filled speaker stands fitted with carpet spikes.  The monitors are about 15" to 16" from the wall and 3' 6" in from the room corners approximatly 6' between cone centres.  They are angled in at thirty degrees which puts the sweet spot about 4'8" away right where I sit. (Thought that was wise)  The room has some acoustic treatment with trapping and is deliberately not an even rectangle (I built it).

thanks for listening. in your face, well, some of the parts are bone dry, but others have ambience on them.
just a subjective decision, you know, you can mix these types of things a dozen different ways, this was just the way i heard it.......last month!
    LOL
every time i listen to one of these things, i think 'man, i coulda done this, or that, right here..........'
    it never ends.

By "In Your Face" I simply meant hotter, not just less ambience;  pushed into the limiters more.

But I agree, there are many ways to skin the mix, and that's why I usually DON'T add my "suggestions" in this forum area unless it's something I felt would add to the mix.
It still was very strong regardless.

thanks for the rundown. sounds like a real nice setup.
good ideas with the unparallel angles
it's good to know if this translates among different systems.

i appreciate the discussion on it, all the same....
it fuels my head, makes me think things through more.
    thanks!

Great stuff! I was walking down "The Strip" a few months ago. What a crazy place.

    Well done!

    thanks so much for listening....
    yep, strip is nuts.
really gaudy, loud, obnoxious, but full of energy.
    some of it negative.
