"The Theme" by FALSE HARUSPEX
https://www.jamendo.com/album/30414/the-themesuch a fun collaboration this was, i'm sharing. not for the faint of attention, this is a One Hour long instrumental, broken up into 13 distinctly different sections. False Haruspex (core group) wrote and arranged the basic tracks, i created solo guitar tracks on the basic 3-piece, some of the rhythms, and some melodies. credits: Gregory Straathof David Lamden Rob Gilliland (batsbrew) Mike Toscarelli + Sophie Sanford Ritcherd Beefheart Audrey Houle Matt Emig Gremislav Iako)))vich ________________________________ Rob Gilliland solo guitar Gear used: 1984 Carvin DC200K electric guitar, with Duncan Custom Custom in bridge, stock carvin neck pickup. Kahler bridge. 2006 custom Strat-style guitar, the 'cream machine', with bill lawrence pickups. Hipshot bridge. 1986 Stan Williams Hybrid guitar, w/bill lawrence pickups in the neck and middle, duncan lil 59'r in the bridge. Kahler bridge. 1981 Mesa Boogie Mark IIb 60 watt tube head, w/graphic eq. This head was modified for some of the tracks with a Groovetubes Substitube Tube adapter (takes 6L6 tubes down to EL84's). Some guitar delay and reverb effects were printed, being added at the effects loop of the boogie. effects unit is a Yamaha DG stomp. Pedals used: Barber Direct Drive SS overdrive, Barber Tone Press compressor, Ibanez Weeping Demon wah pedal. boss NS-2 noise suppressor pedal. Cabinets: (2) cabinets were used. The first, a Demeter Isolation cabinet, was internally miced with a combination of a Shure SM57, and a Audio Technica AT4033. Speakers in the Demeter were either an Eminence Legend 112, or a Celestion Vintage 30. The 2nd, a Roland Closed back 1x12 cabinet with a Celestion Greenback, was typically miced with a ADK Hamburg at about a foot away, and slightly off axis. Some tracks are just the Demeter, some are just the Roland, and some were Summed together, for dry iso cab sound mixed with big room sound. recording chain: from the mic(s), the signal ran to a A Designs Audio MP-1 class A tube mic preamp, out of that into a DBX MC-6 compressor for light compression, out of that into a ART DPS preamp/convertor, that was used for digital conversion only, and into a Roland VS-1880 digital recorder. These tracks were output from the roland into Sonar via a digital coax cable into a MAudio Delta Audiophile 24/96 sound card. (already posted this, the forum software lost it.... even after someone commented on it. sorry for confusion)

I gave Twenty Three a listen Bat, sounds quite good. Need to walk the dog before the sun drops behind the horizon but I have bookmarked it for further exploration.

Wow, almost 10 years ago! Very cool stuff though Rob. Listened to Monkshood - excellent playing. Was this a regular band you were in, or a one-off collab?

very cool wookiee (by the way, i just saw you this weekend at the theatre) 23, the opening track, is a pretty good way to set the mood for the entire thing... it really does want to be listened to from beginning to end, it works best that way. it took me a few months to come up with all my parts..... the other guys added extra guitar parts after i did mine, all the modern crunchy sounding rhythm stuff is someone else, i did all the melodic solo stuff, and some of the funky guitar parts, it's pretty easy for anyone who has listened to my stuff before, to pick my parts out.

heh, monkshood, that one's a trip! my personal favorites out of the list of songs is negation 2 into negation 3 into the final song 'violet to red'. a lot of the melodies repeat throughout the piece as it unfolds; ideas are sprouted early, and then fully developed later. this was a one-off collaboration. i was approached via the VS Planet website by Gregory Straathof, he asked if i was interested in just playing a couple of solos. i told him to send me the backing tracks, and i'd play with it. ended up playing melody lines and solos on all the songs except for one (delirium)

Just had a listen to Negation 2 and 3 - great stuff all around. Progressive yet a bit eclectic. And yeah, I could pick out most of your lines, or at least wah-ish lines that sound a lot like you. Loved how part 2 finished off with a little bass outro...

alright stevec! thanks for checking this one out, it was a pretty epic project...... that wah...........! LOL that was borrowed from a buddy... that was a IBANEZ Weeping Demon i really liked it... it had a variable control on it, for the amount of WAH, and the Q factor of the sweepable EQ....... so, i was having fun messing with the settings on that pedal, and it was inspiring

Yeah, epic is the word. Also, some others... Dramatic. Unconstrained. Bold. Unique. Awesome. Impressive. I listened to the first few tracks. Track 3 ("Buttercups And Candytuft") reminded me of some old Fugazi. All in a good way of course! I'm glad you posted this, but curious as to why you posted it 9 years after production. Was there some recent reminder you had? Great stuff Rob.

Walt Collins I'm glad you posted this, but curious as to why you posted it 9 years after production. Was there some recent reminder you had? hardly anyone has ever heard it. i was listening to the cd of it I have, from front to back, while i was doing some work in my basement, and realized what a great piece it is. it needs to be out there.
