Great bass (prominent yet not overbearing), great vocals (especially with the harmonies in the chorus), great driving, rhythmic feel. Really great guitar solo, too! although I'll bet some might say it has more reverb than they like, I thought the solo was a highlight of your song. I also appreciated the breakdown section, you let it build back up perfectly. Everything throughout the song is exceptionally recorded - is it all going through the pres on your Octacapture, or are you employing other preamps? To quibble a nit, a subjective nit, I thought your outtro vocals were a tiny bit thin compared to the rest, maybe doubling them or some microshifting or? But hardly worth worrying about, it might just be that I usually try to offer some helpful critique somehow, and in your effort, I can't really find much to really criticize. cheers, -Tom

Thank you for the compliments gentlemen. For the first time ever, I wrote, recorded and mixed the entire song in just 3 days. Everything just seemed to lineup. You've got a real good ear there Emeraldsoul...the outro vocals are the only ones I didn't print to the final mix as a double track. I quadruple track almost every vocal element and end up using the best two as a double track. I used a stock preset from S-Gear on the solo so the reverb from that I left alone. When I master tunes the reverb tails often get louder than I'd like (which is why I tend to mix a bit dryer these days.) The only Octacapture preamp I used going in was the one on the vocals. I have an old Aphex Tubessence and a Dbx 166A behind my AKG414 mic. All the rest are effects inside the DAW like IK TRack compressors and EQs. All the other instruments are software based inside the PC. Thanks again for listening and the mix advice. It's always appreciated.

Great job on a 3 day song. The bass line is cool, the tone is not to my liking but that is just a personal taste thing.

Thanks Bapu!...as for the bass it's Scarbee bass neck p/u. I pretty much use it on every mix. What bass tone would you suggest? I midi almost everything so it wouldn't take much to swap out. I don't have the extensive library that you do but I've got some variety! Take care. Mark

ClintMartin Thanks for the compliment! I have Guitar Rig, Amplitube, Line6 AmpFarm 2 (and the Pod HD500 for live) as well as a few others. S-Gear is my go to every time. On occasion I will use Guitar Rig and Amp Farm 2 for some specialty effect (they are both great BTW). But S-Gear just keeps adding new, highly usable features with every update. Plus if you delve into the settings for each patch, there is a free lesson in how to create a myriad of classic guitar tones. Easily the best software I own.

What a fine piece of work Mark. You have a good vocal and guitar playing skills, for sure. All well tracked and mixed. Care to share what you did to "master?" Regarding your amp sims... I have GR 5 and TH2. I use TH2 for the subtler effects and GR 5 for the not so subtle, but that's probably because I don't tweak with the presets much. I've just had a look at S-Gear and I put off a little by their licensing options. Have you gone for the USB key or machine locked option? Just curious

Very cool track, and an outstanding solo. Vocals were excellent too, but sounded a bit thin in the mix to me... could be a matter of personal taste though as that may have been the sound you wanted. Overall a terrific job... especially for 3 days!

Sorry I've been away from the PC for a few days...thanks again for your compliments and suggestions! They are much appreciated! synkotron - I'm not sure what the difference is between GR4 and 5. But before S-Gear, GR4 was my main amp sim. I've never tried TH2. Guess I'll have to check it out. My S-Gear is a few years old and I just had to register it online. I update it now and then because they always add a new amp or effect. I guess the licensing has some new options. I don't iLok so I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that. As for the mastering, I bounced the final mix to stereo and opened a new Sonar Project. I used T-Racks S3...I loaded it with a Classic Compressor (set to slow compress) then the EQ1 (using the Vintage Mix Preset) then the Classic Compressor again (Set to Fast Compress) and then the Classic Clipper to keep it from distorting. I usually have to go back and turn certain things up or down in the mix after mastering, so I probably get it after 3 or 4 tries. Occasionally I'll use a little reverb on the mix if it's too dry or brittle...and I might use different EQ's that come with Sonar if I can't get what I want with the T-Racks....While I try to stick with a basic setup for mixing and mastering, it never fails, every mix is different even if all the parts are similar. Hope this helps!

Indeed it does Mark, thanks I'm with you on the iLok... I'm laptop based and I just don't have the spare ports anyway, besides having a dongle sticking out of the side. MGC59 As for the mastering, I bounced the final mix to stereo and opened a new Sonar Project.
I've read that a few peeps here do that, so I might check this method out for myself. I've got SF10 but I'm mainly using that to trim to length and apply some final compression perhaps. Almost seems a shame to say that, but there you go haha. cheers andy

I had, used and loved Sound Forge for years until the version I had wouldn't work with the next OS. Then last year I saw it for sale (alerted by cclary and others in this forum) by Sony as part of a Suite...Vegas 12, CD Architect, DVD Architect and a few others for some insanely cheap price...the sad thing is I got so used to Mastering in Sonar that I forgot how to use SF! I use CD Architect all the time. I need to get back into SF plus they added some new plugs I would like to try out. Synkotron my laptop has so few USB ports I couldn't spare one for iLok! I have used up all the USB on my main studio PC.
