"Unable to open audio record device" error message

Has anyone had this problem?
I have a number of songs that refuse to play when opened. This error message appears.

"Unable to open audio record device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use."

The thing is, the songs were recorded using that same device, and other recordings tracked before and after the non playing tracks, work fine. It is just this handfull of tracks than refuse to play.

The device in question is a Roland Quad-Capture, which for the most part works fine.
Can anybody help?. Cheers.

Re: "Unable to open audio record device" error message 2013/04/05 22:36:19 (permalink)
You have to provide a BUNCH more information as to what is in these projects, along with more information on your system, and on the configuration settings.

1.  Windows 7 - 32-bit or 64-bit?

2.  Is your OS up to current maintenance levels?

3.  Do you have the latest drivers installed for your Quad-Capture?  Please list the one you have installed.

4.  Is your Sonar 32-bit or 64-bit?

5.  Is your Quad-Capture set to be the default audio device for Windows?

6.  What sample rate and ASIO buffer size do you have specified for your Quad-Capture?

7.  For Sonar, what driver mode are you using?  Look in Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording

8.  For Sonar, what sample rate and bit-depth are you using?  Also in Preferences.
The sample rate in Sonar MUST match the sample rate for your Quad-Capture.

9.  Do you have your Quad-Capture plugged into a USB 3.0 port?  If so, move it to a USB 2.0 port.

10.  Have you tried loading any of these projects in Sonar's 'Safe Mode'?  If not, please do, and try to load one of these projects without enabling any of the plugins, just to see if it loads.

Please review all of the above, and respond to each and every question.

Thanks, I will try to help,

Bob Bone

Re:"Unable to open audio record device" error message 2013/04/07 21:10:36 (permalink)
I've had that message when using the Roland UA 22. It only happens when ASIO is selected, my favourite prompt is 'can't find the UA 22, would you like to use the UA 22 instead". Then nothing appears in the audio devices until I restart the computer - (sometimes 2 or 3 restarts are required). Buffer settings etc are all good, this is not the issue

The problem is USB related, I've also had problems with other interfaces I've tested. Plugging in a USB hard drive seems to be the main problem for me - still need to restart a couple of times even when external drive is unplugged.

It's stable at the moment but I'm still testing - 18 new computers for a school lab. I've kept the interface on USB 2 and have moved the mouse, keyboard and external hard drive to USB 3. Then I went to the device manager, USB controllers, right clicked on generic hubs and went to properties. When I found the Roland interface, I went to power management and unchecked  "Allow the computer to turn off this device".

I'm hoping it continues to work as I want to use ASIO not WDM, the thought of 18 teenagers all saying "mine's not working" is enough incentive for me to continue testing.

Good luck

Make sure you don't have any other sound devices selected in Sonar. ASIO can only handle one audio device at a time.

plug you device in and open sonar go to Devices select your device. (put a check mark next to it)

this happens often after a crash. and shouldn't be a big issue.

sometimes even plugging and unplugging your device while sonar is open can reset this.
when you plug your audio interface back in sonar will ask you if you want to use this device.
select yes.(not all devices do this, but mine does.(a vs-station 20)

Well, thank you guys. I had a mess around and it has come good.  Not exactly sure what I did, but I think maybe the unplugging of the Quad Capture while Sonar was open did the trick. So all is good now.
Cheers.

Re:"Unable to open audio record device" error message 2013/04/08 21:52:20 (permalink)
Yay!

You CAN change the record bit-depth, by the way.

Preferences>File>Audio Data, then you will see a drop down arrow next to Record Bit-Depth.  You should be OK with 24.

You did not respond to my question on the Sample Rate specified in Sonar.  I did see you have the interface set to 48k.  Make sure you have Sonar set to 48k also.  To do that, go to Preferences>Audio>Driver Settings.

Spoke too soon.
The problem is back and disconnecting and reconnecting the Quad Capture while Sonar is open isn't the solution.

Bob, the sample rate in Sonar is the same 48000Hz. The 24 bit depth is greyed out and can't be changed.

The weird thing is, recent projects play ok. It's the old ones that don't, though they were tracked using the same computer, device, and Sonar.

The Quad Capture plays back the test file included with it without problems.

is there something in those older projects that differ from the new ones ?
what could be different" would be my next place I would be looking.

could be a plug in, maybe a synth that is corrupting your older projects and losing your devise somehow.

another thing that may help is delting your AUD.INI file. then letting sonar rebuild a new one.
the AUD INI has all the saved settiungs of your devices, its a data file containg them.(written in notepad)
make a back up first and put it another folder (ive never needed to do that but whos to say there not a first.)

Make sure the Quad Capture is not plugged into a USB hub. It should be plugged into a USB Port on the computer or a powered hub, but not a unpowered hub.

Also, the instructions are very specific that the Quad-Capture must not be connected to the computer when installing the drivers. Most USB equipment is like that. If you didn't install it properly, then uninstall it, then re-install it following the instructions in the manual carefully.

What other equipment are you using, specifically do you have any other USB devices like a USB microphone or other audio device that could be interfering with the Quad-Capture?

The bit-rate you are looking at is NOT the one I referred to in my instructions as to where to change it.  Please review my earlier post.  Bit rate show in one place as grayed out, but to change it you must go to Preferences>File>Audio Data.  That is not your issue with these projects, but is nonetheless how you change the bit-depth for recording in Sonar.

Why don't you try using a Sample Rate of 4.1?  Just as a test.

also, make sure you plug this device in to the same port all the time, don't go using different usb ports every time.
plug it in the same port you installed the drivers to, this is important.

I have gotten that message when there was a clock rate difference.
I have a few older projects that where recorded at 48, when I open them I get that message. I had to go to my interface control panel and change the clock rate. In your case I would try this with 44.1.

Well, I did go to Cakewalk support at the same time I came here, but knowing that they take ages I thought I'd try you guys as well. CW support has responded, but not really helpful.

In the meantime tried all sorts of things as recommended by you guys and I have things working, although I'm not sure how or why. The main thing is that I have salvaged the older projects and things seem stable for now. I have resaved everything to the current settings that work, so fingers crossed.

Cheers
