"Unable to open playback device" error message. (Fixed)
Can somebody please help. I have had this problem since X3, in that when I try to open a project in X3 or now Platinum, that was created using X1 or X2, I get this error message: "Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use. For help, please visit: www.cakewalk.com/support/hardwaresetup/or contact Cakewalk Technical Support" Well, I know it's not the audio playback device, which is a Roland Octa-Capture, because everything else works fine. I can open the project in X1 and some in X3, however all early X1 projects throw up the error message in Platinum. I have looked at the hardware setup page but it tells me nothing I don't already know. Cheers

My guess would be that you either have a sample rate mismatch between the audio interface and Sonar, or you may have another program latching onto your audio drivers at the same time Sonar is trying to gain exclusive control. Is it possible you have ASIO specified as a driver mode in Sonar, and you either both Sonar and Windows set to use your audio interface (that's a no-no with ASIO), or perhaps some other application has a hold of the interface (some other music program). Many, if not most, audio interfaces seem to work better with ASIO drivers (though not always the case), but almost all will not support more than one application accessing the ASIO drivers at the same time. There is a setting in Sonar for sharing the audio drivers with other applications, but I never do that so I can't tell you if you can share with that if you are running with an ASIO driver mode. I do know that WDM allows it, but as I indicated, most interfaces produce much less glitchy and better sounding audio when you use appropriate available ASIO drivers. So, please check out the above, and see if any of that applies to your situation, and post back with your findings. Thanks, Bob Bone

Thanks Bob. Interesting ... As part of my normal set up all audio from the computer, i.e Media Player, YouTube and Audacity etc. all are played back through the Octa-Capture without any problems. Do I understand that you are saying this is not a good thing? I will try to re-route things so that only Sonar uses the audio interface, and see what happens. Wal

I happen to run with only Sonar and some stand-alone synths pointing to the ASIO drivers of my audio interface. Windows and Windows Media Player and all of that - all points to some other sound device - either the on-board sound of my computer or my usual mode of pointing them to output sound to the HDMI of an I am suggesting that it would appear that Sonar does not have access to the audio interface, on your system, and that sometimes folks run into this very issue when multiple applications are all vying for control/access to the ASIO drivers, because as far as I am aware - 1 application can have control of the ASIO drivers of an audio interface. It might be worth a shot, and I think would certainly be worth testing. Bob Bone

No it's a TERRIBLE thing. Use your audio interface for DAW, onboard sound for the rest. Long time ago I used my AP2496 and EWX2496 for games. Audio would crash.

@Optimus - can you please post back and let us know how testing is going with these issues? Bob Bone

Good news! It looks like making the audio interface exclusive to the DAW did the trick, and for good measure I unticked the sharing box in preferences. The onboard computer sound card takes care of all computer related sounds and the OctaCapture is now exclusively for Sonar. I can now play all my old stuff again. Thanks for your help guys. Cheers Wal
