That was killer as usual, and always a great big sound. Nice!! Also listened to Interstate Sun 2, just blown away as always. Great work as I always hear in your guitar playing. Got to love it for sure. Peace and Blessings, John

I like the slow intro build-up ;-) Great work and mix. Plenty of room in the center for vox even w/ a million guitars. @

guitarplayer thanks man, and also thanks for checking out the highway star cover. that was a fun collab with xenophile, for sure.
the drums are, of course, live drums, with the music overdubbed on top of the drum tracks. the original demo served as the 'guide track' for the drummer to lay his tracks down, then i re-recorded everything else to match the energy of the drum tracks. i used a single 1x12 closed back cab with a celestion greenback, and a 57 on the cone, and that was it, for each guitar track. maybe proximity effect on the guitar tracks helps it sound 'big', that and some reverb i put on the drums.

pttaxavy thanks for listening, pedro... wide mix.... just really simple mix, really...... one close mic on the guitars (shure sm57), one rhythm part, played twice, hard panned left and right.. mono bass up the center.. snare and bass panned up center... one solo guitar up the center, with a stereo delay on it in the mixdown.... overheads panned hard left and right on the drums.... tamborine and shakers panned left and right, about halfway out each. for the lead vox, i sang it twice, just like i did with the rhythm guitars, and then did two part harmony on top of that, with the backups panned a bit left and right, and the two lead vox tracks straight up, one lower than the other. the one keyboard line, and that's it. i think it was a casio keyboard straight into the recording deck.
so, with guitars, it's very straight forward..... there are only two tracks of guitar, then the solo....
but to play the rhythm tracks tight enough, so that they blend together, that was key. i close miced, but i had the guitar cab on a padded chair off the ground, which let the cabinet have it's own voice, instead of picking up the room floor sound so much.... i ran that signal into a tube preamp, with vu hitting 0db, so not very hot..... a little compression on the way into the Deck, and almost no eq. in other words, a very simple and honest capture. guitar rig was really loud. 60 watt mesa boogie mark 2b head into a closed back roland cab with a celestion greenback, the amp was pushed with a Boss DS-1 pedal on the solos. really loud. LOL

Thanks for sharing the great and simple recipe on your mix.... and you´re totally right about keeping it simple!!! These days we tend to have every plugin possible in our daw´s, but a lot of times i find myself spending to much time on those plugins on the mixing phase witch can be counter productive. Thanks for making me reach this epiphany!!! From now on i´ll try to dedicate 80% of the time in getting a great guitar tone before recording and the other 20% for simple mixing decisions like panning, compression, and eq. , Because in reality theses can go a long way!! Thanks, Pedro,

NIce formula - hope you didn't let all your secrets out, Bat. But seriously, it is always nice to hear how someone structures a song and recording and mix. Even if you don't do rock, the idea of how to arrange, structure and mix a rock song can help w/ any style of music. Even some nice tips for guitarists - getting the amp off the floor. Good stuff.

LYNN THANKS MAN, kind words for sure. yes, greatest hits. LOL AT yep, slow build ups make it pop more. heheh no, i just jumped right in on this one. sometimes, it just makes sense to me to do the opposite of what would be expected. that was the case here..... now, you realize that most of the time, there are only 2 guitars going.... and a lead now and then.. so it was really easy to mix this one.
sven i WAS having fun! heheh, i look goofy when i play, i sink down on my knees, hold my lips funny, guitar face.

SPEEDTOM thanks speed, nuno, nah, i'll never play like nuno.. he's hangin' with rhianna, that's so cool.... that effect at 1:23 is just a keyboard/synth. i forget the patch..... pedro you are welcome.
waltenstein thanks for listening and commenting.... yep, it's short... it think it's barely 2 minutes!! one for the ADHD generation......... guitarhacker thanks herb, you know, whether its rock or other, that idea of thinking thru arrangments is key for everything. i mean, even when you layer a lot of stuff, you gotta know where everything sits in the mix even before you mix it, or you end up with pudding. lol
AT hehe, no secrets here..... and the amp off the floor thing, really works. i've even set a cab in the middle of a couch in a studio, everything matters to the mic.
cryophonik thanks for listening! that bass line, was mostly just single line copy of the guitar line... but it needed that low end definition, and really, is just kinda like a fast mccartney melody line. if it was punchy sounding, then i got what i was after. sometimes it's really hard to dial in 'punchy'...... easy to get low, or treble, or clean or distorted, but not punchy..... that's a bit of voodoo. freddy J thanks alot, i appreciate it.
