"You Said You Loved Me" jazz tune with EZ Drummer Nashville brush kit

Hi guys,

I haven't posted songs here for a long while and thought I would let you know what I have been playing around with.  I have been testing another DAW which is good for me since I have only used 3 DAWS in my life before checking out S1 (Amiga Soundscape, Peformer on a Mac SE, and Cakewalk).

Back in December, I bought EZ Drummer Nashville and tried out the brush kit on this jazz tune I wrote.  I kept adding instruments and out came this piece.  I need to work on the lyrics (you'll see).

Anyway, hope you enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Rimshot

Update:  I apologize but I loaded the wrong mix (this first one didn't have an ending).  I have added the new mix here:

Feels a bit cluttered to my ears Rim. I say this because generally your mixes are sparse (in a good way).

A good effort none the less.

I like it. didn't seem cluttered to me. The horns were a little out of tune here and there but I kinda liked that too:)

Thanks for the good vibes you guys!  I appreciate it very much.  I uploaded the final mix just now with a proper ending (well an ending anyway!).  I meant that to be the one you heard.  Everything else is the same.

Bapu:  Cluttered for this rag tag group of jazz guys is a compliment!  They always seem to do what they want.  Hard to get too cluttered though with bass, drums, percussion, piano, alto, trumpet, and vocal.

Robbie: I did the sax using Presonus S1 Presence Alto Sax.  The muted trumpet was from Dimension Pro and the full trumpet was GPO4.  Thanks for the kind words.

Hey Tim: I left the out of tune horns because they really reminded me of my old Sound Logic Recording Studio days in Los Angeles when I recorded alot of jazz on by Fostex B16.  Billy Higgins solo album was one I produced and engineered.  It was hard to tell a great bass player he was out of tune.  Those were they days!

Hi Chas:  Thank you for the listen and glad you liked it.  This was done really fast and you can tell I did not muck it up too much  - just left most of the parts the way I jammed 'em.

Oh, I'm sure I could make less than that sound cluttered.

I's sure you know this, it was just an opinion. Maybe more due to my state of mind rather than facts.

Now this is the way to mix a song. It is 99% perfect. I am very impressed. The only thing niggling at me is the bass. I listened once on the monitors, then again now on the cans and its got an odd overtone that sounds very much like noise, but is not. Assuming this is an upright, it sounds detuned and sloppy and detracts from an otherwise stellar mix and arrangement. Ok - listened to it a third time (really hard to tell what I am hearing) and its both the bass and its interaction with the kick... the attack is odd. Anyway... fab work. Mind blown. Awesome job.

Hi Shad, your comments were great and thanks for the 99% perfect.  I know you listen well to forum song postings and I appreciate your feedback.  The Jimmy Saad Virtual Jazz Ensemble salutes you.

I never noticed the bottom end issue so this morning, with coffee in hand, I opened up the song and behold, I had used Softtube Saturation Knob on the upright bass!  I didn't remember that.

The setting was on neutral with the knob at about 9.5.  I did not use any high pass filters on the bass or kick so I think you heard the Saturation Knob effect on the bass!  I think that speaks highly for your great ears because you did not know I was using that effect.  I am impressed!

For the attack between kick and bass commnet, I quantized the drums to about 80% but did not quantize the bass.  I tried to keep most parts as live sounding as I could.  You picked up on that as well.  Looks like the bass hits at times slightly ahead of the kick.  Great ears again!

I appreciate the time you took on this.  Thanks again.

That was very soulful.  You don't always need a ton of words to make a point, especially if the instruments are as expressive as this.  I love the mix because, to me, this sounds more human and not so "produced".

    Sixfinger: Thanks much.

James: Much appreciated.  The sax came from Presonus Presence Alto Sax.

Notnat:  Thanks for the kind words on my vocal.  I layed it down - not having worked on the lyrics and just kept the first takes.  I got lucky!

Thalweg: I was happy with the drums.  I did the finger drum thing using EZ Drummer Nashville brush kit and it was so easy and smooth.  At the end of the mix, that cymbal hit goes on for many seconds as it decays.  You'll have to really turn it up to see what I mean.  The sample was great.

Lynn: Your comments are right on.  It didn't seem like I needed to have more lyrics for this song but if I ever considered it for an album or someone else's release, I would write another verse.  This was the shortest lyric I have ever written in a song in my past 50 years!

Thanks for the good point on "human" vs. "produced" feel.  It was easy because I did not spend much time on each take and I left all the glitches that normally would have been removed just to keep the feel live.

I think if the mix was not quite as good as it was otherwise, I never would have noticed the occasional oddness on the bass. I think you might be right that all I was hearing was a very slight timing imbalance with the kick that, while really quite subtle, interfered with the bass. The saturation might be accenting it a bit, though I am not too sure. It really is a good mix. It washed over me with a rich warmth to it that fit the music to a T.

Thanks again Shad. I may not be so lucky on my next mix but it feels good to know this one was liked.  I am working on not messing with parts, EQ, arrangement too much these days.  I record as though the final mix is in process so I am always listening to what the final might sound like.  It helps me not overdue too many things.  It also helps in keeping space in the song which I think helps a lot with the overall sound.
