I did a more comprehensive delete of the Cakewalk Registry entries and this time the re-install worked properly and all is fixed. I think it was something in the VST scan on start-up that was the culprit because I deleted the VST inventory hive and as I said. All is OK now.
Goes to show you really have to dig deep in the registry to delete SONAR.
You'd think the uninstaller would really take care of it for you because as it stands it realy doesn't uninstall SONAR to a degree where you can successfully re-install the program.
