"the WEREWOLF song"
happy halloween! -- "the WEREWOLF song" http://www.lightningmp3.c...-WEREWOLFSONG_2011.mp3 "The Payment (werewolf song)" - a classic horror story re-told :D this is an older song, that i recently created a new drum track for, did completely new rhythm guitar tracks, and re-mixed from scratch. i tried to make this mix sound........NOT smooth. LOL in other words, there's a lot mixing going on, but i tried to make it come across as 'raw'. to match the intensity of the vocal, and the story line. i'm on the fence, ultimately, about having the guitars panned evenly across the sound spectrum, or just recording one really harsh, raw, filthy rhythm guitar track, and leaving it that way. panned a little to the left, reverb hard panned to the right. but, not THIS version!! LOL story: it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope....... it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand; he knows he's phucked, so he goes to the old gypsy woman who knows about these things, to find a cure, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself...... what a bum deal. anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and proceeds to meets his maker. the remaining brother wants revenge, but has sobered up now, and has figured out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition... ....so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here and a prayer there, and believes that he's well prepared, and he goes out to the moor to get his revenge. but that's not what he gets...... “The Payment” Written by Robert F. Gilliland Nightime, on the moor drank up all the mead mist is in the air full moon, did the deed. never saw the evil... that poor ole son of a **** felt the claws that gripped his throat yeah, he was dead without a twitch. "it's your brother down on the moor, with his head down at his feet!" drink the aconite, tonight toast the witches curse pray to whoever you believe in to pass over you the worst it's your brother on the moor, with his head down at his feet and the debt has not been paid in full will you, your maker, meet? run into the moor and see the evil eye upon you, cast a glance, and the payment, it is nigh.

not as fine a recording as some of your recent efforts, but that's to be expected. what it is is a great tune, some cool guitar playing techniques in this, and your harmony vox are the icing on a tasty shred-cake...

Dude......Killer vocals ........and love the guitar tones...... Your guitar tone sounds very direct and to the point, while your technique gives it some real intellect and complexity. Seriously good stuff. I really admire how these creations come to you so fluidly. Your playing is very unique to your creations..........it really works. My son wants me to express his thumbs up as well.

Hey, Rob, Very cool song! Dynamite playing and great vocals, as always, and the new drums and guitars sound great. The song definitely has a ton of raw energy going on and would fit right into the soundtrack of a werewolf movie. Nice work, brother! Bob

MGH i'll take that as a complement! LOL yep, it's gotta be more raw, the original was super smooth, and it just didnt' sound right to me. it still doesn't.... and i've since made a new mix of this, that i think is way more dialed in. panned the guitars more centered (-20, +20) with all the backup vox, tom drums, sound effect guitars, all panned hard left and right. re-eq'd the guitars a bit, to make them a bit more punchy, and went to a slap echo on the vox that is more present. clean thanks mark daryl thanks for the kind words. it was a fun song to write, actually, it pretty much wrote itself. zungle appreciate the listens man.... for the record....only the 2 main rhythm guitar parts were recorded 'direct', everything else was miced off a cab. i had to play REALLY REALLY loud, to get all the feedback parts to work. i basically just stand close to the amp, and the notes take off by themselves..... i just have to be smart about how i dampen everything i don't want to sound out..... --tell you son i said "Thanks!" bob thanks man, i used my latest acquisition for the new rhythm guitars (a 1977 Ibanez Artist) that's my most 'les paul'ish sounding axe, which works for this kind of sound. markno999 thank you for listening and chiming in..... you know, i really don't think this would work as a 'soundtrack', cuz it's basically telling the story.... but i think it'd be a great basis as 'instrumental only', because of all the feedback soundeffects i've got going on throughout. the original had a lot more 'screaming' in it, done with the feedback on the guitar tracks. i edited that all out for the singing version......

That's awesome! My littlest one was a werewolf for Halloween, she was a SheWolf! I think I like "crankiness" fx of the guitars and their well timed entry and exit points. This piece is probably a bit more sophisticated than some would recognize. All various elements finely balanced with differentiating effects. Very nice.

Hard to say which I like better. Especially listening back to back. The new version seems easier on the ears in a good way but still lacking some in your face. I think I like it raw. Awesome tune anyway. I think this is the third year I've heard it around this time. Thanks for breaking it out.

VENUS thanks venus, appreciate that! i think i might have been a little werewolf as well, once upon a time.... now, for clarity, there is zero effects on the guitars, in the classic sense. all of the guitar tracks have a simple guitar>>amp>>cabinet>>mic source sound. i put a bit of reverb on a couple of guitars, just to make them less "direct" sounding.... now, there is a mix element going on, that involves multiple guitar tracks feeding back from the amplifier... each track is a harmony, in feedback, and there are at least 5 at a time, and they are mixed in and out of the mix at various times.... it almost sounds like keyboard parts, but it's a simple loud guitar feeding back, multitracked. and yes, it is quite a bit more sophisticated of a mix than meets the eye... but the idea is to make the mix so smooth, that it is not noticable. what i meant by RAW, was implying the SOUNDS were more raw. the mix is pretty intense, with panning and volume envelopes on every track, including the drums. appreciate the comments!! rhynosynth new version, easier on ears, yes, it's a combination of the mix eq on the individual tracks, and then the mastering application. the first one has more midrange and cut (bite) and therefore sounds a bit more in the face. also, it has a completely different panning scheme. interesting how much little things can change things........and, how little these changes really effect the 'big picture'. LOL on the merry-go-round...... guitarhacker thanks man, appreciate it. seriousnoise appreciate the kudos. i DO check mixes on many soundsources along the way, it helps to hear it thru buds, and jamboxes, car stereo, home stereo.... this mix is so complicated, with all the guitar tracks creating the 'sound fx' as venus mentioned, you almost have to go about it like you're painting with sound. if i run the mix with all the automation shut off, just faders up, it gets a bit cacaphonous! LOL thanks for listening
