realtek asio issue - SPDIF Out???

For some reason, out of the blue basically, my ASIO drivers force the Playback Timing Master to be "1. ASIO4ALL v2 Realtek HDA SPDIF Out 1" which is nuts because I'm just trying to listen through my laptop speakers. So, the result is that I don't hear anything. It worked fine for about a year.

I'm using Cakewalk Homestudio 6 on a Vista machine. Now, I don't really remember what the Playback Timing Master read before, but I'm assuming it wasn't going out of the "SPDIF Out 1" considering my laptop doesn't have SPDIF. It should be coming out of the speakers! Suggestions???

using a realtek you shouldn't be on ASIO driver mode at all. go to OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = WDM
    close SHS
    restart SHS
    let the wave profiler run

if that doesn't work right, change it to MME32 driver mode instead. make sure and restart and let the wave profiler run after each time you change the driver mode.

Check that you've got the appropriate drivers checked/available under Options>Audio>Drivers. Then go back and change the selection for playback and recording timing masters. I don't know if this is a vista (update) thing or an ASIO4ALL thing, but it happens sometimes.

Brace yourself for those who may berate you for using the realtek

Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing was working. So, I uninstalled SHS, reinstalled it and now I get the message "The following drivers either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another application." And it lists all the Realtek HD stuff (output, CD input, mic input, and Stereo input). The choices are Disable and Use Anyway. Clicking either does not help.

It's never been like this. I don't know what changed. I only use the built in Realteck driver when I'm listening to tracks away from my recording setup (Line 6 Toneport). It was doing fine, totally reliable (using asio4all) for a year.

I haven't seen what happens when plugging in the Toneport since I don't have immediately available right now.

Asio4all doesn't show any devices at all (WDM devices) and sure enough when I switch to Asio the Playback Timing Master says "1. ASIO4ALL v2 Not Connected 1".

do you have other options to choose from in the playback timing master dropdown menu? you probably need to change to MME (as Reece suggested) in options>audio to use the realtek and reconfigure windows sound to use the laptop speakers

there were no other options in the dropdown. I looked at programs that were installed recently that might have screwed it up. One was Livestation - an online tv thing in beta. I also saw something called OpenAL listed. Not sure where that came from but it's has to do with sound. So I uninstalled both. It is not working in MME but unfortunately I have that old problem where if MME was selected the dialog box will not close if you select any other driver. So I'm going to uninstall/reinstall again (and NOT select MME!). It worked great in asio4all.

Anyone know if Service Pack 1 for Vista would mess things up?

I'm thinking if the next uninstall/reinstall doesn't work then I just need to reformat the hard drive. Something is messing up the operation of SHS big time.

a better option would be to do a system restore back to a point before things went pear shaped for you...much easier and should get things working for you again

I started looking into that, but the only restore point showing is from today. I would need something from, say, Thursday Jan 22.

Thank god it finally works! Sheesh! RealTek WaveRT (is this something new - or something that got updated by Microsoft in one of their updates or maybe SP1?) needs ASIO4ALL v2.9 to work. V2.7 was simply not recognizing the drivers anymore due to whatever change occurred to them. Playback Timing Master now says "1. ASIO4ALL v2 HD Audio output 1". Holy crap what a hassle this has been! thanks for everyone's help!
