recommendation for monitors/speakers please?
Hi all, I wonder if anyone can recommend a decent pair of speakers please? The ones I'm using are cheapies and headphones in the hot weather is tiresome BUT flitting between the two is playing havoc with my levels - anyway its time I invested in a good pair. thanks in advance

Sure, but you should mention price. The "hot" speaker these days are (or were, these things change) the Barefoot. If you don't have 10 grand I'd look at the Yamaha mps series. The 7 is a good room speaker (even tho it is only 6.5 inch woofer), while the smaller ones have little bass but I've seen them used in major studios as reference. You can find 7s on sale for $600 a pair or so. Below that, you are as likely to buy something you can use and something you can't wait to replace. IF you have a guitar center or access to other such music stores you can check out how speakers sound in a crowded showroom, so you can knock stuff off the list you might have otherwise wanted to try.

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

A lot of monitors are rear ported, they have to be away from walls so be aware of porting and room treatment. I can't recommend anything because what I like and you like will always be different. It's been 3 years since I went in a store and listened,, things change fast. But I'll say I lean towards Yamaha's.

Depends how big a jump you want to make. There is almost no upper limit to what you can spend, but the cost:benefit ratio drops rapidly over, say, the 500-dollar mark. Part of the reason for that precipice is that at some point the contribution of the speakers becomes dwarfed by the contribution of room acoustics. Past that point, spending more is an exercise in futility. If you're flush, then go ahead and spend $2K to $4K for Focals or ADAMs. But prepare to be disappointed, because until you've seen to acoustical treatments for your room you won't be able to enjoy the benefits of high-end monitors. That said, I am extremely happy with my current speakers from Emotiva, which punch way above their price class. I loved my previous ADAMs, too, but they were stolen. My insurance company depreciated them so much that I had to shop around for something comparable but cheaper. The Emotivas, to my great delight, turned out to actually be a significant upgrade.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Hi. As mentioned, budget is important here. If you don't have a budget, I'd very much suggest Geithain RL 944K or Amphion Two15 (the latter are passive). These are the best two monitors (in order) I've ever listened to (in pro studios, fully treated) But cost a bunch of money. The Gaithains, are a LARGE bunch Otherwise, I think Yamaha (HS 5,7,8 or MPS), JBL LSR (305, 308) as the others have said, is the way to go. All the best.

I really love my JBL LSR 305! I was astonished with the size in the first moment (they seemed big). But they are clear & neutral. When I started them up first time, I played a round World Of Warcraft and I had the feeling I am sitting in the theatre. The music I played with them after this sounded perfect, no matter which direction. I never heard better (neutral) sound before. I had the feeling, as if I hear instruments never heard before :-) All my mixes I made with these LSR 305 are well done. For the price I doubt you get anything better.

FWIW the HS series are rear ported, the MPS series have ports in the front.
