record ezdrummer real time via midi keyboard in sonar 8.0 pe?
Another question...I am able to play the individual drums on ezdrummer via my midi keyboard in Sonar, like a real drum set, but I have been researching whether or not it is possible to record my own playing, rather than dragging grooves to tracks. I would rather do it this way than using pre-recorded grooves. Anyhow, I am unable to record the actual track, as it shows a piano symbol in the corner of the track and no record button. Anyone? THANKS!! Kev

yes and no. it's not specific to EZdrummer - any drum output synth will work for sound. you'll be recording MIDI data from the keyboard. set up a MIDI track, set up the INPUT of that MIDI track to your keyboard MIDI I/O, arm and record, then play notes on the keyboard. even if there's no output of the MIDI track, little MIDI data notes should show up on the track as you play.

What Beagle said except you should assign the output of the midi track to ezdrummer (or whatever softsynth is being used). Essentially the synth is set up in an audio track but you need to set up a midi track and then assign the output of the midi track to the synth (audio track).

I have done that, issue is, there is no record button on the midi track. There is only a piano icon.

You inserted a MIDI track and there is no Record button. I'd say that's not possible. You are looking at a soft synth folder, not a MIDI track. Go to the INSERT menu . it's the second down from top. > Playing drums from your keyboard is a great way to make more natural sounding drum tracks. > You can play along with the metronome or what I've done since 1986, create your song using a drum pattern ( loops). Then I delete the Kick/Snare from the pattern and play/record to the hi Hats in real time. Then I delete the hi hats and record the hats and cymbals in another pass. I find this method WAY quicker that gluing together loops. PS try Session Drummer too. Once you have a MIDI drum track you can assign it to any play back synth. You can even split the parts out and assign each drum part to a different synth. Learning how to make better , realistic drum parts with Sonar will make a huge difference to your songs.Patterns are for lounge lizards :>

Actually, now that I think of it, I'm not sure that I created a midi track. But if I insert EZD on a track, does the track not become a MIDI track by default? And yeah, the whole missing the record button is killing me. And yes, playing the drums themselves sounds very natural.

When you add EZDrummer, in the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog check the "MIDI Source" and "First Synth Audio Output" options, and don't check the "Simple Instrument Track" option.

Separating MIDI and audio into their own display objects makes it much easier to see what you're really doing. With the added benefit of getting back the functionality that instrument tracks take away.

Hopefully that'll help...I know I'm close to solving a somewhat simple problem, but my noob-ness just keeps getting the better of me. I will check back later this evening.

Yes you get it when you get home, by what you just replied I figure you have ONLY inserted a soft synth. You cannot record to soft synth track folder. You have to insert a MIDI track. Either use the drop down menu from the top or right click the track pane of any other track and it will be inserted above. Most of us use a template that starts out a few audio and MIDI tracks as a matter of course.
