There are lots of things that might not be set up correctly.
Not only does the target audio track have to be armed for recording, you must go into recording mode (Record button on transport or type an "R" or whatever works for your software).  Just going into playback mode won't work (although you might see a signal level on the armed track).

You might also need to enable the recording of "What you hear" on your sound card.  To do that you have to visit the recording properties (not the playback properties) and enable "What You Hear" or "Stereo Mix".  Might be called something else or your sound card might not even have that capability.

See if any of that helps....

    Hi Larry,
I know the basics, been recording audio may times but never used softsynths.
I know arming is not enough, have to press record button :)

so far no luck, have softsynth on channel 1, same on track - for input tried many settings same as output.

How about telling us what was going on so others can learn.

Well, to be honest when I was trying softsynths i didn't have a keyboard yet with me (travelling) but now I got myself a portable keyboard and when connected all softsynth play and record fine when using this midi keyboard but still not when using soft keyboard build in.
I think it's by design probably, you can play and hear the sound but not midi record unless there is some way to do this like bounce to track etc. Not really important because who play using soft keybaord on screen anyway? I was just wondering for testing.

You're right, it's meant to be that way. The virtual keyboards of the soft synths themselves can not record in SONAR, they're only for auditioning the sounds. To record you use the step sequencer, step recording or draw directly on the Piano Roll.
