recovery of data after blue screen
Hi all, first post here. Last night I was having a little jam session with a buddy here and we were recording the whole thing into Sonar 8.5 While recording (and doing several other things at once ) I suffered a blue screen. After restarting, I noticed that the audio file I was recording at the time of the crash was actually saved to my projects folder, but it wont drop into sonar and I'm unable to open it with even Windows media player, which leads me to believe the data is corrupt. But on the offchance it isnt, does anyone know if there is a way to recover this audio file? I can tell you this, the filename doesn't follow the normal naming scheme, ie instead of saying "#####, audio, rec (3)" it is simply "###, rec (9)". the content seems to be there though as it is a 300mb file. Any suggestions on how I can recover the data in this file? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The file is probably truncated, the buffer having not been completely flushed to disk prior to the crash. If you have a hex editor, open the file and see if the first 4 bytes are the letters "RIFF" and the 4 bytes at offset 8 are "WAVE". If they're there, then it's likely the header is intact and the wave might be salvageable.

This is a tiny bit beyond what I know how to do with a computer, so any chance I can pick your brain some more? I downloaded a free hex editor, and this is what i saw obviously that's just the top, but it sounds like what you were talking about, which gives me hope. How would I go about reconstructing this file? Thanks for the help Brandon OH, and I also have the whole hex readout in HTML if you need it.

Yup, that's what a wave file header should look like. That file should be salvageable. I am not surprised you can't play it with WMP, as it is probably a 32-bit file and WMP can't play 32-bit files. What happens if you open a new SONAR project and attempt to import that file into it? I'm wondering if it may not be the wave file that's corrupt but rather the project file. EDIT: Oops, I retract my WMP statement above...looking at the hex data I see that it's actually a 16-bit mono file (the 0x10 at offset 34 is the wordlength) that WMP should have no problem playing.

The file just simply doesn't import into a new project, and I can play the original project still, so I don't think that that's the issue. I also tried importing the file into another DAW (reaper) and nothing happened there either. Keep in mind we were recording the file in question when the blue screen happened, so it wouldn't have gotten a chance to "finalize" or whatever it has to do when it stops recording. And yes, I did find learning how to read that hex code pretty interesting, so thanks :D appreciate everything so far Brandon

Did you try opening it in an audio editor such as Goldwave?
Cakewalk by Bandlab - Win10 Pro x64 - StudioCat Platinum Studio DAW - 32 GB Ram - MOTU UltraLite-mk3 M-Audio Keystation 88ES - Akai MPD26 (hot-rodded) - Alesis DM10 - a few guitars, a few amps Novation Launch Control - Korg nanoKONTROL2 - PreSonus FaderPort - DAW Remote HD on iPad Adam A7X - Behritone C50A PreSonus Monitor Station v2 (controlling the mons) https://www.facebook.com/groups/sonarusergroup/

No-go on the Goldwave. Upon opening the file it tells me that the Internal data size is incorrect and the file may be corrupt and then asks if I'd like to continue. After that it loads the "file" which is a black screen. Pressing play does nothing.
