re-install 8.5 on a new build.
So, I need to install 8.5 on a new build. How do I bring over any configurations from my previous setup? I have templates and colors and key bindings exported, so, that's covered. Is there something I should do with the aud.ini or some other file? Should I copy/paste my whole 8.5 directory so Sonar might see it during install and take whatever it needs? Pretty sure that won't work. What about all my effects presets? Oh no. I don't even know what I ain't got.... This is going to be painful. Any ideas appreciated.

Tim, Bring up your Plug-in Manager "Tools>Plug-in Manager". You have to go through each effect and instrument and "Export" your presets. Then you have to "Import" on the new machine. I would NOT bring over the aud or the old directory, I think that would be a recipe for disaster. If you have saved presets in 3rd-party VST's then you have to find where each stores it's presets. ie: I have saved presets for TRackS3 in Sonar and TRackS3 (PITA). Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple to use utility for all this? One of the subjects Cake and think even Garrgius don't cover. As long as the old machine is not "dead" you can go find what you need. The clean install, Oh the Joy! Good Luck Off topic but... Make numerous images while you're getting up and running, it'll save your a$$. Use the Win utility until you go Acronis or whatever...

Look in Global>Options>Folders to find out where certain things are stored, e.g. Track Templates, Drum Maps. If you have saved any new ones or modified existing ones, then you will need to back them up to be copied over to your new installation later. On the other hand, if you have never saved or modified anything here, then there no need to bother. If all of your multisamples are kept in one place, then make a back up. When installing Dimension Pro or other softsynths that rely on lots of sample content, it is not usually necessary to install the multisamples from the installation disks. Just install the softsynths from the disks and copy the multisamples manually.

DeeringAmps As long as the old machine is not "dead" you can go find what you need. Good point. Keep the old installation for as long as possible. If you later discover that something has been overlooked in the transfer, then you can still retrieve it.

As long as the old machine is not "dead" you can go find what you need. I think it just died, maybe. I got everything off it except a few odds and ends that I was going to copy. I went diddling in the wires (gently) looking for the front panel USB headers (that I never did install in the board) and poof, something shorted. Bios doesn't see any hard drives. we'll see... no time for that right now. I don't know whether to cry or laugh.... Yea, I've got 2 images and haven't even loaded any software on the new box. Anyone know the advantage of Acronis over Windows imaging thing. The imaging part worked real easy and fast. Don't know about the recovery part. Anyone tried a recovery with windows? Thanks guys.

Hi Tim, The advantage Acronis has over Windows Imaging is ... you can restore an Acronis image to any size HDD. I don't think you can do that with Windows Imaging but I'm not 100% sure. I have used Windows Imaging and it does work ... but I used it to restore back on to the HDD I made the image of ... This is why I always preach about freezing all of your tracks. You can load the project in to any version of Sonar and not have to worry about missing plugins.

This is nuts. So, I installed Sonar 8 on win7 and stuff is everywhere. It was like this before on my XP rig too. I was diligent with the data files going to a folder on my F: drive, but all the diddly sqwat stuff is just everywhere in duplicate sometimes. I just don't get it. Is it me, or microsoft, or Cakewalk? I went looking for the normal.cwt file and can't even understand where I found it. "C:/program data/cakewalk/ etc etc" where is "C:/program data"? I don't see it under C:/... Huh..? Then I noticed something to do with "true pianos" all by it's lonesome in some weird non related file tree. Those are just small examples. IS it ME?? Cakewalk folders are all over the place........ Why can't everything just be in C:/Cakewalk/Program files or documents? Anyone got any ideas. I'll start over if i have to.

Tim, Options>Global>Folders is where you change all that. Look at Audio Data under Global as well. Go to my user name dot com, you can call if you need help. Tom

Thanks Tom. Yea, i know that stuff. It just seems so unorganized. I mean, Options/global/folders shouldn't even exist. There's like 15 entries. It's like Cakewalk said, "I don't know where to put this stuff, let them figure it out". I checked your site and love your playing and tunes. I've been meaning to put some 'American songbook' stuff up somewhere (for no particular reason:) I do love that stuff. "The fundamental things apply" except for Sonar:)
