removing silence
when editing / trimming waves in the track view; do most of you do it by hand, with the mouse, or can we trust the remove silence plug-in in Sonar. also... anyone have settings that will allow the tail ends of reverb etc...I have found the default it too severe to use and it cuts out subtle parts.

Generally I'll use a gate in the FX Bin, if I want more control I do it by hand / ear using splits, trims and fades. Can't say I've ever really used the remove silence tool although I'm aware it's there. Child

Remove silence seems to be kind of a blunt tool for a dynamic song. I would go with manual fades, or gates on individual tracks.

I often don't remove silence or even diminish the volume between, say, vocal phrases simply because the ambient noise adds color to the overall mix but when working with long files I do use remove silence. I get pretty good results by adjusting the Look Ahead time which causes the gate to open slightly before the sound reaches the open level and the Release Time which does the same thing for the end of the phrase. Also, slowing down the the Attack time can make the transition from silence to sound much more natural. Details available in the Help tab on the Remove silence gui.

that remove silence function in Sonar is WWWAAAAYYYYYYY past a MAJOR (i mean, MAJOR) update... how about some graphics? How about a nice little waveform overview with adjustable thresholds etc.... bring it into this century.

thanks for the responses; I was thinking a cleaner wave = less space so i tried trimming all the blanks spots out, you know the way loops look like; so what i'm gathering (for now) just leave the entire wave alone?

I just tend to use volume/mute envelopes on clips with noisy gaps. Just as easy to do as any other method, and if you don't like the result, just delete/modify the envelope(s).

Remove silence seems to be kind of a blunt tool for a dynamic song. I would go with manual fades, or gates on individual tracks The Remove Silence tool is a gate - so it's as blunt or as sharp as any gate, depending on the settings that you choose. The difference between it and a plug-in gate mainly seems to be that Remove Silence is applied destructively thereby saving disk space as well as gating out "near silence". This was a much bigger deal when disk space was costly. The consequence of saving the space is a fragmented audio track. OK if nothing gets disturbed, but in my experience far too likely to end up with occasional segments being moved inadvertently, screwing up the timing (or maybe improving it!). I agree that in most circumstances a soft plug-in gate is preferable.

can we trust the remove silence plug-in in Sonar. It reliably does what it says. However, it is blunt and it is destructive. I almost never use it anymore. The sudden drop-out of ambient noise usually sounds wrong to me. When my goal is saving on file space, I generally trim by hand and typically leave a lot of space on either end, using the clip boundary (nondestructive) tool if I want something different for mixing purposes.

Most answers here don't deal with what "Remove silence" is made for. It's not meant for deleting the noise between phrases, it's meant for decreasing the size of audio files. I suppose that is also the reason it's left so rough? The audio takes equally much space on HDD no matter if there's recorded noise or silence. "Remove silence" cuts out the audio data which has no "information".
