In SONAR, you can select Show Velocity on Active Track only, so if you do have your drums split over multiple tracks (my prefered way of working anyway, as I can then easily move, say, a snare pattern in the Track View) and multiple tracks open in the Piano Roll, you get the same effect.

feel like I've stepped into some alternate reality here. Velocity tails are MOST useful when programming drum parts. That is, if you're shooting for anything resembling natural and dynamic percussion! Or are all you guys into drone music? What am I missing here?

I absolutely agree with you that "Velocity tails are MOST useful when programming drum parts." So maybe I'm doing/perceiving something wrong. Knowing the velocities is critical for dynamic percussion; however, if you have multiple "notes" at a time point, it's impossible (for me) to tell how the velocity relates to individual notes. I don't think the tails (i.e., the little "flames" that come off the rear of the note gives an accurate enough redering of the velocity to allow subtle editing. The workaround for me has been to turn off the sticks until I'm happy with the note/part placement and right click on the notes individually to get velocity INFO, OR break the drums into separate MIDI tracks and have the vel "sticks" visible. The latter is fine, but I prefer to do the composing/editing with the entire drum kit "notes" visible. I think in some programs (Cubase?) you can have the equivalent of our PRV visible in one pane and restrict the focus of the "velocity sticks" to a note range (e.g., only HHs). Hopefully, I am operating out of ignorance and I'm missing some thing. - Ron

Yup the overlaying bars. TBH I'm not even sure what velocity tails are, but I have played with that button and it doesn't remove the overlays.

Well all I know is I have found no way to disable these overlaying bars permanently, other than pressing 'C' to move them to a separate pane, but once again that can't be hidden permanently either.

Well I'm confused and out of ideas then because those settings definitely stick here.

Update: I'm less confused now as I've had a bit more of a play.

C (hiding the controller pane) sticks
Y (hiding velocity tails) sticks

But, if you have the controller pane hidden, the velocity bars (in fact, they're narrow lines that appear at the start of each note) appear in the main notes pane. But, if you unselect Velocity from the drop down under the toolbar, these too disappear.

I mean why would they have implemented this, then made it impossible to disable?? I upgraded from Sonar 3, it used the separate velocity pane which was easily disabled permanently.

Well that takes the lines and opens a separate pane, which I have equally no use for. Same thing here, when I drag the pane to hide it, it appears again next time I open the piano roll.

But is there a way to change the default setting from velocity tails on to velocity tails off? If ya don't use the tails it'd sure be nice...

Thank you so much for the tip. :) I was always having to right click and uncheck show/hide continuous events. What a pain it has been. I wish it would remain unchecked and not reset after closing the piano roll view. Anyways...

Well this place was my last resort.

Last resort?

Does that mean you've already discussed this with CW customer support, didn't like their answer and hoped someone here would have a trick that the vendor didn't know about? If not, I'd suggest giving them a ring. If there is a workaround, they'd know about it, and if not they might be willing to add the feature to a future release.

(Personally, I'd be lost without the velocity tails, but that's just a personal opinion)

Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to do this since I got Sonar 6 PE last November. When you click on the Piano Roll, it shows the velocity as vertical bars. I hate this. I can hit that one button in the upper left corner to turn it off, but as soon as I close the window and re-open it, the bars are back.

I have customized the environment mostly to my specifications, this is the only remaining thing I cannot fix. I find it hard to belive there isn't a way to turn off the velocity lines permanently. It's possible there's a simple answer and I'm a complete idiot. Can anyone help?
