I didn't get a yeah or nay! I got NO response

I got a response - unfortunately, it was "nay". I was thanked for my understanding (which I had not offered) and I was told that it was a "business decision" "taken at the last moment" to include z3ta+ and that was why there was no opportunity to stop people from wasting their money paying the full price for it days before the S7 launch.

I protested that I thought that Cakewalk was not dealing fairly with its customers here. In principle, willingness to discount for people who had bought S6 in the run-up to the launch of S7 is exactly the same as willingness to recognise recent independent purchases of the now-bundled soft synths. CW has not even given me the courtesy of a reply to that, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

I think CW has a split personality. The product and technology team could not be more engaged and positive, as exemplified by the contributions of Noel and others to this forum. The CW on-line store and CS group could not be more different. I find it unresponsive and unhelpful, and with a degree of arrogance that I find distasteful, which is not helped by the frequent systems and process screw-ups that cause frequent comment in this forum.

You shouldn't feel like a cheapskate for asking - CW should consider itself deficient for failing to respond to perfectly reasonable points and questions from its customers.

I know. I was one of those who has Producer 6, Rapture, Z3TA+, Dimension Pro, Rapture and Project 5. I also own Edirol Speakers and an Edirol UA-1000, and a Roland XP-80, all from divisions of the same company. I asked if there was any consideration of the Z3TA+, DP and Rapture purchases in providing some discount on the upgrade to 7.

I also have Finale for my MIDI work, so the main reason to upgrade was to stay current with a quality product and stay in the support loop, if needed.

I didn't get a yeah or nay! I got NO response. A little disheatening, and makes me feel like I'm a cheapskate for even asking. Oh well.

Lots of people ask about rebates or discounts on software they've purchased that are now bundled with S7.

Cake doesn't reply.

Sad, really.

Image-line, for example, not only give you free updates annually but also keep track of what you've bought so that you never have to buy things twice.

SteveC - thanks for the reply - so some folks did get emails after the official release? I understand that they wouldn't send them out before, but why not after? And I still don't get the upgrade pricing, but then its pretty much the same with cell phone service... if you don't have service yet you get better treatment, then once you get in... except that Cakewalk's tech support has been superb the few times I've had to use it...

And I'm not saying anything bad about the 7 release... it sounds great, but for what I do it just seems like bells and whistles I'll never really use.. except the MIDI tools change up... I must admit that might actually be worth the upgrade... but my philosophy is if it ain't broke, etc... for my humble purposes, 5 is just fine...

The Rewire problem I ran into with the 5.2 upgrade (actually it may have been introduced in 5.01 can't remember that far back) is this: In 5.0, when using Reason and and Redrum module, the module's channel settings (names) would automatically show up in the piano roll. Very useful when you want to use Sonar as the sequencer. When they did the upgrade to allow access to more than 16 Rewire channels, that went away. It hadn't come back in 6.0. Although I do have a work around using Drum Maps, its still a bit of a pain.

As to why didn't I see it on this forum... I don't visit this forum much any more... I got tired of all the trash talking and posts full of hate... Maybe its improved, but I found myself getting sucked into some ridiculous threads and not spending more time in the studio... kind of assumed that a major release like 7 would at least find its way to splash ad at the top of the other forums... Instead, they're still pushing Project 5...

Anyway, long post with little useful information... sorry, but appreciate your reply...

First I heard of it was in a Guitar Center add, and I thought someone was having me on, but they had a picture of the box, so it had to be real, right? Didn't see it mentioned in the forum I normally hang out in either; you'd think that news like this would merit a sticky or something in several forums. Or at least an email to registered customers.

I don't believe the emails go out until the new version is officially released - and not before. But yes, I did receive emails from CW once that happened. Though, I did read about v7 here before I received any emails...not sure why you didn't see those posts?

Oh well, didn't upgrade to 6 anyway, and don't see a whole lot worth the hassle of upgrading to 7 either, unless they've fixed the Rewire problem they introduced in 5.2.

I think there's always going to be releases that just don't have anything to offer, to someone... I have yet to find one of those myself, with v7 being waaay out of that category! " /> But, to each his/her own. Not sure what Rewire issue you're referring to?

anyway - now you have peaked my interest because iTunes wants a CC# before they sign me up. Is that just incase I buy something and its free to upload to your account. Dont get me wrong, if Itunes is the best
CCDB player for uploading CD data
Then ILL give them the 50-100 bucks a year or what ever they want.
I just would like to buy the right one and you have to admit that a recording DAW, like sonar should have that feature. IMHO

I got my copy of S6PE in August, and I was wondering if it's too late for me to take advantage of the cheaper upgrade cost to S7PE? Or is that offer only for people who bought directly from Cakewalk.com? I haven't heard anything in any emails from them about it yet.

You can embed the Title, Artist, Album, Year, Genre and Comments as ID3 tags in an MP3 (using the Lame Encoder for instance)...but it doesn't presently support the inclusion of a graphic for the album cover...

...But there are just dandy free applications to do this once your MP3 has been created. Look for Mp3tag.

It does require an activation code, but you need to be on the Internet only to receive it; the code is not machine dependent - you can install on more than one machine, provided you use it only on one machine at the time.

I think the features are worth an upgrade in most cases.
Alone the bundled software synthesizers are more expensive. Unfortunately I bought one before already...
V-Vocal ability to extract MIDI out of Audio files is also very good. Magix Music Maker can extract guitar chords out of audio files, that would be great to have for virtualisation and transposing also.

For me, a really good, ease of use drum editing tool like there was once "Dynamic drums" for Amiga computer would be a good idea for next version, also possibly more support for Songwriting.

My question: Does Cakewalk Sonar 7 require an activation like e.g. Windows Vista? (If yes, I won't upgrade)

Actually - Your suggestion was one of the first things I tried... However, it didn't seem to do as well as actually summing/bouncing the track folders to create a single stereo audio track...

I tried both bounce to clips, as well as bounce to tracks...

Solo'ing the track folder, then using bounce to tracks with the Entire Mix option - seems to work best... as far as boucing all those little audio snippets to create a single audio track. If you just use the Tracks option - I end up with a track for each audio snippet... which doesn't really help things at all, when it comes to this specific situation.

In other words - yes, the suggestion you gave is what I am using - and, it works quite well.

It seems that the problems are coming from the demo project itself, it's all those little audio snippets in the guitar, drums, and background vocal track folders, as well as the audio snippets in the lead vocal track....

Just as an experiment - I went through and archived those tracks/track folders... first starting with the drums, played back the project... archived the guitar track folder, played back... etc.

So - it would seem that if I just bounced each track folder to produce a single, summed, track... this would eleviate all the CPU choking... it must be a matter of simply having too many audio streams opening and closing.

Which bodes well for me -- as, with my projects, I don't really follow this sort of method of audio production anyways... Yes - I do often use multiple takes... but, once I'm happy with the track, I almost immediately "print" the finished track, then archive the originals.

I'm breathing a sigh of relief now! :)

- File-->Save as with a version number added as a suffix to the name of your project
- Select all audio tracks
- Edit-->Bounce to Clips

You now have the clips archived in the original project and a new version of this project in which to continue working without the overhead of countless small clips. " />

Did you click on the Details link - then the Order History link?

At the order history link - try clicking on the words tracking number... even though the initial page might say that the order is pending, they may have already shipped it... that's what happened to me. I wouldn't worry unless you don't get by... oh say... about Tuesday.... it shouldn't take that long though... they sent it to me via FedEx 2 day.... so, you'll most likely get it by Monday... It wouldn't hurt to check your credit card account to see if you have already been charged... if you have been charged, then Sonar 7 is most likley already on it's way to you....

Also - thanks for letting me know about this. I just picked up the laptop recently (it will be used mainly as a typical mobile computer... but, also as a "softsynth" host- as I am getting more involved with that stuff with my work with the Akai EWI.

So - based on what you said... I think it *definitely* is time to build a new computer for my DAW. I'll probably get a Intel based quad-core system... build it myself from parts I buy from NewEgg.... :)

When the centrino came out, it was on par with approx. a P4 of twice the speed. My celeron 1.5 (mobile) outperforms my older P4 3ghz laptop.

Your Celeron M 1.87 ghz should EASELY out-perform a Pentium 4 at 2.4 ghz. No question about it. You can check Martin walker on this (SOS magazine/ forums).

It is not by accident Intel dropped the P4 line and that all new Intels are simply based on the centrino design.

First off - thanks for responding to my query on this forum. You're presence here is very much appreciated!

Yes - I COULD raise the latency to correct the problem -- and, that works well as I would only have to raise to about 40ms (roughly) for all the drop-outs and hiccups to stop.

That's ok for post-production -- but, what if I wanted to add another track or two on top of this (already pretty bloated) project? The increased latency would make monitoring (playback and live input) an adventure unto itself! " />

Oh - and yes, Freezing the tracks do help -- I also gave that a try, but forgot to mention it.

1) Print all the softsynth tracks as audio... then delete the soft synths from the SynthRack...

Instead, you really just need to freeze the tracks. This will automatically convert them to audio and disconnect the synths from the audio engine.

Also, raising latency during mixdown is actually the correct thing to do because it allows more effects/synth plug-ins to be used. Don't be afraid to raise it to 100ms or even higher if you need it.
