The snare sounds a bit like cardboard to me. It might be better with less reverb.

LOL You think? It is an impulse called small drum room and it totally trashed the original sound which was way too pristine for the effect I was hoping to achieve. Methinks I'll try turning it down a notch.

Very nice tonal balance on this one. The snare sounds a bit like cardboard to me. It might be better with less reverb.

Thanks Cass. I agree with you about the Dirt Band. I loved their version of Mr. Bojangles. They were/are huge here in Alberta and one of my regrets is that my band turned down opening for them at an arena show back in the 80's because there was no money involved :(

I had to check this one out as my parents have a house in the freakin' swamps of LA (that's not Los Angeles) south of New Orleans close to Tibedeux (sp?).
Sounds good--really reminds me of old NGDB when they were more traditional bluegrass sounding. Vocals, too. That's a huge compliment because I still listen to "Uncle Charlie and his Dog Teddy" all the time. I attribute my gravitation toward acoustic guitar to that album...

I've several new songs that are in development, which really means I haven't finished arranging them yet. I've learned the hard way that I have to have a full arrangement in my head before I start recording tracks in the computer. Otherwise I waste too much time trying out different ideas.

What's this?! Two songs in less than one year?
You musta had a productive weekend. I just discovered 'Nighttime' and took a listen to that too. Reminds me of Creedence. (that's a compliment, dammit!) Is it a new one?

We had a three hour drive to a gig and I quickly mixed a half dozen songs to critique during the drive in order to stay awake. Yes I'm still up - we played to 3:30 AM.

New is relative Paul. Wanderin' Man is only 25 years old. Nitetime is a toddler being less than a decade old. Both songs were subjected to my usual snail-like 3 year production pace. Thanks for the compliment. I'm a big Creedence fan. In fact we performed a killer (if I may say so myself) ska-tinted Down on the Corner last night.

so many things I like about this, the chord change on 'know', the picking, the general sense of fun, the bluegrass feel, the list goes on. The vox is a tad high in the mix and would be better off with a bit more air, but that's just nitpicking. Got my toes tapping anyway. " /> Keeper.

Hiya Randy.. I'll not repeat the processed issue! This is quite a nice song. I very much enjoy the instrumentation and the overall feel. The reverb sounds a bit "boxy" and needs to be opened up a little to allow for some breathing room.

Thanks Darryl. There is definately a bluegrass element to the song. When it was written I was a huge fan of David Grisman and his various projects. My favorite 'record' album is Grisman and Grappelli live with a very young Mark O'Connor on various instruments. It looks like my attempt at a different vocal sound isn't working - in this track at least.

As for the comparison to Ricky Skaggs, thanks but I don't deserve to hold his mandolin picks:)

( I have been accused of having Ricky Skaggs' hair in the past.)

Nice song; it has a little bluegrass feel to it. This one reminds me of Ricky Skaggs (pick'n, harmonies, mandolin).

I thought the vocal performance was solid but processed (as mentioned earlier).

Cool song. I like the mandolin (I think it's a mandolin) lead. Good vocals. Good tune. Good harmonies. I like the chord change on the word "know" ("but I know..."). If I were to nitpick at something, the acoustic sound at the beginning was a bit thin sounding on the higher notes... there might be a little buzz in there. Great pickin. Good job.

Thanks for listening DJ. I knew I shouldn't have turned up the vox:) The lead vocal was recorded during allergy season and I've been experimenting with it to see if I can hide that fact. It is compressed by the Ruby Tube plug-in which adds a bit of grit but you might also be hearing the vocal reverb which is a small room simulation using SIR.

thought the song was well done.. instrumentation was great (I'm a North Louisiana guy myself).. the vocals in general was well done, and the backups sounded fine.. But the lead vocals was just too strong.. I also felt like there was some kind of effect or compression in the vocal itself, it sounded somewhat artificial but not sure.. anyhow I think if the vocals were lowered just a tiny bit, it would help blend the vocals with the rest of the song, instead the forceful nature of vocals just nagging at the ears of listeners.

By the way, "Emily" was the best of all you had to me.. I like the lyrics, instrumentation, and composition, well done, and should be a song on the radio.. well done.

Cajun Flavored Test Mix Part Deux (Randy K)

Hi everyone. I'm getting tired of working on this one so I thought I'd post a test mix here to see what you think.

I wrote the song around 1978 for my band to perform at local dances and I remain true to the original flawed song in this version. The song is called Wanderin' Man.

Any and all comments are welcome though I'll mention that I am going for a live sound and may actually go so far as to add audience noise to further the illusion.

Mix #2 is up at the above link if you're interested. I've fixed what were actually phase problems in the track.
