From the industry I work in, there's a great example of a company that had a good, solid, stable product that ran on proprietary processors using compiled code. There was no GUI; it depended on literacy of its programming language to write line code, and it lacked some abilities that people were starting to ask for. So, they came out with something new that was programmed with a Windows application with an elaborate GUI. It was easy for the novice to get into, but it was flaky as hell and unreliable. End-users were getting mad and wanting the system ripped out. So, the vendor had to come up with something new that had the functionality and GUI-ness of the flaky system but the hard-core robustness of the old compiled system. That's what MicroSoft needs -- Vista pretty, DOS stable.

I think the only way they could get the stability is to buy Sun Microsystems and use X-Windows Solaris compiled for the x64 chip. (Doc_Hollingsworth)

Acutally, I find it somewhat interesting that Pete's cry for more efficient code has been answered by Cakewalk. But not in the manner that he was hoping for. The code efficiency was addressed in S8 and SHS7. Mostly to take advantage of the changes that Vista brought with it and the change in hardware architecture over the last 3 years. Unfortunately we will be looking to yet another change in OS here in the coming year according to Microsoft. Windows 7 which is meant to address all the short comings in it's Swiss cheese OS Vista and it's barely functional predecessor.

I'm sure the programmers at Cakewalk are having all sorts of fun with trying to make things work within the Vista framework. It would be nice if they had just 3 flavors. Sonar Lite, Sonar Standard and Sonar Xtreme. Kind of coinciding with casual user, home studio user and audio geek.

RE: SteveScrumpyUK goes platinum ....
