The Proteus can support up to 16 channels -

Is the keyboard sending midi data to the desired channel? On the Proteus GUI press the red button (top left) that says 1-16. This will display all 16 channels. Press a key on your midi keyboard. You should see midi activity on one of the midi channels.

I do have the settings as both of you suggested, and I had loaded the composer (sounds) file into Proteus.... I'm stumped. Oh, I'm using Win XP Pro.

When using the Proteus as a VST you have to load the sounds into the synth.

Insert the Proteus synth into a project, then;

From the Proteus GUI, select: File> Open > Proteus X Composer

You should now be able to trigger the sounds from your midi keyboard - assuming everything is routed correctly. You need a midi track with the input set to your keyboard and output set to Proteus. HTH

I would look at your setup.
If you are hearing sounds other than Proteus, your MIDI track output is set to something else, most likely the Prodikey, since that is what you are hearing.
Check out this thread from the Music Creator forum. We just went through an extensive exercise with Proteus VX, which is a repackaged version of Proteus X LE. It may be of help.

What OS are you using? It seems to be hit and miss with Vista.

I just got my first MIDI controller -- don't laugh -- a Prodikeys (USB). I can play DreamStation DXi2 sounds triggered by the keyboard, but Proteus X LE sounds won't play -- I'm getting default Prodikeys sounds. I can't figure out what's wrong here. Any ideas?
