This whole thing has been utterly bizarre to watch - people getting their underwear all in a bunch about what? naming conventions? What does it matter what it's called? It's a massive amount of new and improved functionality, and the price seems pretty reasonable for what it is. If you think the functionality is stuff you'll use and justifies the price for you, go for it, if not, sit it out. But thread after thread and page after page of crazed speculation and people acting as if their best friend were turning on them... I don't get it. Suggesting that it should be free because it's called 8.5 not 9.0? What? Cakewalk is running a business! Perhaps they're not running it exactly the way you would, but then again they have been in business, and a tough one at that, for a good long time now, so perhaps it's fair to give them the benefit of the doubt? Apparently not.

Now people are talking about the psychological effects that all this 'confusion' has had on them. What confusion? There's a new version coming, it has new stuff, it will cost some money. Same as every year as far as I can tell. Given that it's less expensive, the only significant change seems to me an improvement. No wonder everyone's complaining - err, what?
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (bunkaroo)

Fret Wizz

bunkaroo

Just to clarify - I don't care about the number. What I care about is a change in the status quo. Given that change I am taking a wait and see approach to make sure it is indeed worth $99. I hope it will be.

Regarding Windows 7, I'll believe it's solid when it's been out of the gate a while. No way I'd do day one on it.

Conservatism is alive and well.

And that's the funny thing - I am typically impulsive with purchases and like to have stuff now now now. The fact that it feels right to wait and see on this one goes to show what kind of impression the various communications have made on me and some others.

Probably the best way to evaluate the update is to ignore the version number. Just look at the features, and the price, and decide if the features justify the price for the kind of work you do.

Exactly what I'll be doing. :)
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (Anderton)

I just don't get the controversy - seems like a fair price for what you get, and I'd rather have the updates now than wait for the additions to be bundled with something else later on and have it called "Sonar 9."

Probably the best way to evaluate the update is to ignore the version number. Just look at the features, and the price, and decide if the features justify the price for the kind of work you do.

8.5 is clearly a lot more than a "bug fix" upgrade - the PX64 percussion strip, VX64 vocal strip, matrix view, and significant updates to Session Drummer, AudioSnap, and the Step Sequencer are pretty heavy-duty and the kind of things I need for my studio. I don't see any way Cakewalk could give all that away as a "point" upgrade, that's a lot of stuff.

So, it makes sense to me that they release a "lesser" upgrade (which given what's included, shows just how much has been added in previous upgrades...) at a "lesser" price. More intriguingly, this ups the speculation about 9. Maybe it will be another "half price/half upgrade," or maybe it will be some really huge deal, like native Mac operation or netbook compatibility via Windows 7 or...?

I feel that 8.5 is seriously good value, especially if you do the kind of music I do. If all you need is track view and console view and you use Sonar as a multitrack tape emulator, then the 8.5 upgrade is probably of far less interest.

AFAIC, Sonar 8.3 has been fabulous. I'm even using it more and more for mastering these days because of the ability to automate effects (something not found in many digital audio editors), the linear phase effects, and the crossfading. I've now done two albums on 8.3, both very demanding classical projects running at 96kHz, and they sound fabulous. I expect 8.5 toi be equally useful.
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (Jose7822)

Fret Wizz

Nick P

Hope I'm interpreting this thread correctly. Didn't bother to wade through 4 or 5 pages of posts. Sonar is different in that no matter what you pay, you always get and install a full version. Once you have the DVD, it doesn't need to see a previous version or a cut-down current version. What you pay is based on what other products you have registered with Cakewalk. That's why it's important to register your products and keep your own records of serial numbers and purchase dates as well. This would be in contrast to a Windows or Microsoft Office upgrade version where it needs to see something on the computer in order to allow the install.

From what I've read recently here it would seem that is not the case with the 8.5 update.

It installs over the previous version.

Whether that is a good or bad thing, time will tell.

To add to what Fret Wiz said and from the latest trend in Sonar updates, the 8.5 update won't require previous Sonar 8 updates, just the base 8.0 version. IOW, you can go from Sonar 8.0 and update directly to 8.5 without installing the previous patches. This update won't be a full install. There's over 10GB of content spread out in 4 DVDs and this is a downloadable update, so it's definitely not a full install.

Take care!
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (Howdy)

 I suggest the name: Sonar 8 1/2, or Sonar 8 3/4.
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (strikinglyhandsome1)

Updates install over versions so it shouldn't be a problem.
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (Fret Wizz)

Nick P

Hope I'm interpreting this thread correctly. This would be in contrast to a Windows or Microsoft Office upgrade version where it needs to see something on the computer in order to allow the install.
Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (Hunter)

You have to admit the wording of the emails could be interpreted as deceptive, at best deliberately vague (I very nearly fell for it), and given these tough economic times, this is not the best thing to be doing to your loyal customers! If they had only explained what they have now at the time, none of this bad feeling would have occured, I can really see why so many people on the forums feel decieved and tricked.

Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (strikinglyhandsome1)

syntheticpop

strikinglyhandsome1

It came in a large box like normal and it had the manual and the smaller CD box inside. I still have the box. I only keep boxes so I can answer questions about boxes when they occur.

so you must have got the Full Retail version. The Upgrade version must not have shipped in a retail box but instead with the packaging i mentioned above. the large box is handy because you can store the manual and software in it. the back of the box usually lists features and show screen shots so that would have been nice to have. i guess if i knew i wouldn't be getting the box i would have paid the extra $ for the full version for my box.

I got the upgrade - upgrade and retail are the same thing - you don't get any less. Only the code is different. I'm in Europe, perhaps it's just different. The price certainly is.

Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (ivanSC)

Unless of course you got Studio, which DOES come in a black DVD case containing one lonely little DVD.

Re:CAKEWALK SONAR 8.5 PRODUCER (is the NEXT version) (syntheticpop)

strikinglyhandsome1

It came in a large box like normal and it had the manual and the smaller CD box inside.
