Users have expressed an interest in learning more about the internals of the new features in 8.5. I will cover this here from an engineering perspective. Before I get started on the fine print, I thought it might be useful to first clarify some facts and myths about SONAR 8.5.

The .5 release name for a major product reflects a change in our internal nomenclature for naming products, a business decision that was made after careful deliberation.

This may not get answered and may not be in the right place but heres a stupid Question I bought Sonar 8 in May, all is good I was thinking agbout an upgrade X1 won't run on this computer and I'm not ready for a major upgrade.. I would like to upgrade to 8.5 I noticed in the Online stor that there is a free upgrade for people who bought Sonar 8 after July so... Why?... can't I.... I should of waited 5 more weeks before buying 8 to be eligable for the Free up grade doesn't seem right to me

IMHO, get 8.5 (then upgrade if you want to stick with Cake) if you can. X1a Has a learning curve for sure (although not bad), and can be buggy( bakers got more baking to do on that one). 8.5.3 has been wonderful on my system.

Kind of off and on the point--I haven't been to the store in ages and trying to find out how to purchase 8.5 upgrade from Sonar 6 (long story.) I can't find Sonar 8.5 in the store only X1. Is X1 Sonar 10 for lack of a better explanation and I should just purchase that instead or should I get 8.5 and X1? If there is a tremendous learning curve for X1 I would rather get 8.5 first.
But, I can't find the upgrade page to 8.5 from Sonar 6.

Cool...A reason to load Win7 x64. I just bought the 8.5 Upgrade from SHS 7 XL on special for less than a C-Note, can't wait til it arrives. I haven't really scractched more than the surface of Home Studio, but HS was always just an incremental step for me, I've wanted to get the pro software ever since I got SHS 6.0 thrown in with a soundcard I bought.

So now the Terabyte drive that has been sitting unformatted in my PC since I installed will get a brand spankin' new install of Win7 x64 and Sonar 8.5 64bit...

The last time I worked with Sonar 64, it was Sonar 6 HS, and the bit-bridge tech didn't seem to work out so well for me...everybody seems to be happy with it as it is now. We'll see how WusikStation 5 handles it.

I didn't understand any of it...but that is why I use the product without problems...and without having to think about those things...because I'm just a dumb musician...and you guys are the geniuses. Talk about an upgrade from my TEAC 4 trk...and the Commodore 64. A gift from the gods.

Excuse the wierd formatting. I havent quite figured out how to get a word doc into a forum post properly.

Noel: like many others here have said, this Fine Print doc is some of THE best technical literature we've seen yet, and I too was convinced I wanted the upgrade to 8.5 PE after reading this. I've got my 8.5 pkg already and am doing some drive clean-up and optimizing before loading.
Question (and why I quoted this remark of yours), I bet a lot of us would love to get a nice clean print of your doc here, but everything I've tried only grabs other junk from the forum page, skews the format, etc. Any way you can post us your doc or PDF format of it, in a link where we can print it out cleanly? This is something I want to refer to as a referrence for a long time, especially the technical threads on the 64-bit sections. I can already see I'm heading for a new i7 or i9 64-bit Win 7 hardware platform upgrade in the next year and am following this thread very eagerly!

Hello,

Yes you can drag in audio from outside the project via the Media Browser or from Windows Explorer itself. Audio that is imported this way is stored internally on a hidden matrix track which the matrix uses to reference these clips. In SONAR 8.0.1 if you want something to loop the clip should be acidized so that it can match tempo. In the upcoming update there are many enhancements to the matrix, one of which is a new "import all audio as grooveclips" option. When checked it allows imported audio to be automatically acidized. So if you drag in a standard wave it will convert it to a groove clip internally and stretch it to the project tempo.

SHOUTS and APPLAUSE!!!!! That is so incredibly AWESOME! I can't tell you how cool that is! I used to acidize tracks all the time and it's really, really easy...Now when you say upcoming update...do you mean one we don't even see yet...after the Matrix update that I've seen out there now right?...

Noel,

I ordered 8.5 yesterday and am *very* interested in the Matrix Grid. Will that pull in audio from outside of the current project on the fly, and if so, how does it match to the tempo? Should audio files already be rex or acid with tempo mapping in them?

To ease the anxiety for the next release I will let you in on a secret - the next product release will be called: SONAR 1C21B83D-EDCE-41b7-BBEF-31F912E88B1D. We think that a 128 bit version number will dispel all ambiguity the next time around.

Well, I was in a quandary as to what to do, because 8.5 totally messed up my only-update on odd-release policy. Unfortunately, the next release 1C21B83D-EDCE-41b7-BBEF-31F912E88B1D is also odd, so that doesn't help.

But this thread sure does. I'll be planning to get 8.5 when I build my Win 7 x64 machine.

How & why example: How 64bit and how bitbridge technology actually work down to core base?

In depth Tech-Questions.

Q1: Do you use kernel calls directly to the API?

Q2: What languange do you all use programming SONAR and all plugins? C++, Microsoft visual basic?

Q3: Are you using any core-lines that you have got driectly from Microsoft or Intel, that benefit optimizing for SONAR 8.5 under those system?

Q4: 64bit and how bitbridge 32bit-->64bit technology actually works down to core base? Calls and so on?

Hi bitflipper, I have some good news for you. The Sonitus delay issue was also fixed in 8.5. Bob Damiano fixed that one way back in March. Echoes of yesterday are no longer an issue. Thanks for reminding me - I'll add it to the fine print.

Wow! I was sitting on the fence here as far as upgrading to 8.5 but now it seems inevitable. I just need to decide what 64 bit platform to get. I think I'm going to wait til Windows 7 ships so that I don't have to deal with those issues. This kind of transparency is unparalleled and truly appreciated.
