Here's what I hear on first listen (after that any song starts sounding pretty normal and you loose your sensitivity to things being a tiny bit out of place). The rhythm guitars might be a touch on the bright side. It's hard to say if this is the actual eq of the track or the type of distortion used. With big guitar rhythm tracks it's always a fine line between keeping the attacks bright enough to have impact (so they leverage the wide panning), and not eating up the entire top end. (Honestly, it's pretty good the way it is, but it struck me as a tad bright). I think leaving a bit more top end available in the mix for the vocal might help. (I know when anyone comments on a guitar player's tone you can be stepping on thin ice, but in-the-mix you sometimes need to compromise now and then.)

The panning on the backing vocal might be a bit wide for this mix (I hear it as wide right channel). It's a bit tough to tell. I think I might be hearing a third (high) harmony on the third line but it could be an illusion. Mostly I'm picking up the lower harmony though. I wrestle with backing vocal panning myself. There seems to be some magic point where if they are more centered they nearly dissappear and you loose the impact of the stereo image, and if are wider you start loosing the implied chord (blend?) that makes them function as a single instrument in the mix.

No criticism of the guitar solo (the guitar work in general is killer). There might be an opportunity to put more tonal contrast between the rhythm guitars and the lead to have it stand out a bit more, but it's sits pretty well as it is.

The vocal after the guitar solo (starting at 2:13) is where I really start picking up the wide pan of the harmony vocal. I would at least move it more central for this part of the song. (if it were 3 parts I might leave it wide panned). I think another thing that makes it stick out more is that it seems as though the vocal processing in general on the chorus is different than the verse (slightly phasey with more ambience I think).

Great work!
Re:"Rock Tonight" Party Rock Anthem (ohgrant)

Love it!! ok, this has 80's hair all over it.
everything is well played, well sung, and in the pocket.
nice solo work, very tasty.

the guitar tone is too hairy for me tho..
or, at least, is very fizzy on the high end.
not the solos so much, but the rhythm guitar.

this reminds me a lot of early scorpions, were they an influence?

don't dig the chorus/phase on the vocals, any chance of hearing a mix with the vox unaffected?
i don't think you need that effect, your voice sounds fine, and these kinds of effects are very 'dating'.

mix wise, i'd love to hear the bass a bit louder, a bit deeper. the snare needs a bit more pop to it....
overall, the final mix has a bit too much treble sheen to it, and sounds a bit scooped thru the mids.
Hey, that's great about redoing "I Love You Goodbye', you just made my day, I loved that song, and I'm also looking forward to your blues cover!

Yep, I definitely know what you mean about going back and re-recording and remixing stuff after learning more about the production process over time, that's what I've been doing the last couple of months.

Have a good one!
Bob-------------------------------------------------

mcourter: Hey, Mark, how are you, buddy? Doing great, I hope! Thanks for checking out "Rock Tonight" and for your kind comments.

Yeah, at times I find myself guilty of switching up my guitar tones from song to song. I think it's because I always bi-amp and sometimes tri-amp, so I always end up tweaking my core sound and experimenting to blend the different amps. I'm usually shooting for some combination of a modern "scooped" alternative metal sound mixed with a classic 80's rock/metal tone. Kind of like Boston, AC/DC and Motley Crue meet Nickelback, Sevendust and Killswitch Engage in a dark alley and mix it up! <img src="http://forum.cakewalk.com/upfiles/smiley/s2.gif" alt="" data-smiley="" />
We love the vocal and harmony. The drumming and guitar are very good. Bring the vocal in alittle bit more. Great rock song.

Re:"Rock Tonight" Party Rock Anthem (CLEAN)

Wow, what a kick ass tune - Bob, you blow me away - this really good.
