It always is, especially when you want bass sounds. A bass would be my first thought. You'll never get the sound of a real bass, that youll get from midi bass sounds. There is nothing like the Real The nuances alone would be very noticeable

i bought a little 100 dollar short scale jazz bass on ebay just now.. I dont know if it will be any good or not... i've got a small 10 watt GK combo bass with a direct out. thats how i recorded our bass player previously, seemed to be fine. I used to play bass in bands.. twenty years ago. I went to guitar center to try some basses and I was shocked at how badly I played. Maybe the short scale will help

Just throwing out a quick suggestion if you decide to go with a "real" bass guitar.

I just bought a Behringer BDI21 bass guitar amp simulator/DI box. Basically it's a DI box with a bass amp simulator built in. It sounds great: nice, full, round tone, and seems to give some compression to the signal, which is nice on bass. Great tool for recording bass, IMO, and it only cost $30... Combine this with a $100 bass guitar and you're good to go.

I also found a sort of workaround for the moment, I play guitar thru my mixer and onto a track, then apply three FXs: FreeAmp, which has a few OK sort of bass amp emulators, and a pitchshifter, down 12 semi-tones, and some EQ. It aint Stanley Clarke but for now, it will do.

If home studio has a way to convert audio to midi, you wont need any midi guitar device. If not, an upgrade to soanr producer is allot cheaper than $700 and soanr producer has a few things that can convert audio to midi and it does it great.

Sounding like it'd be easier just to get a bass, or just get a MIDI controller with and keyboard the bass line in. I'd expect it'd be a fairly sophisticated rig to convert guitar to MIDI.... which explains how Dave gets to $700.

Just that you need more than just the MIDI pickup. You need the Roland GR20 guitar synth and the pickup. So you're talking about a $700 investment.

I've done this to some extent, with mixed results.

You will need a converter of some sort. I use a Brian Moore guitar with a Roland GI-20 midi inteface, via USB. Tracking and glitch/ghost notes are a problem. I have toyed with the midi filter settings, but it's still quirky. For pads, synth chords, and non-percussive stuff it's great. I don't have to learn to play keyboards to get what I want. It actually works pretty good for kick, snare, and high hat programming, but again, you'll have to go back and clean up the tracks in the piano roll. It's hard to play clean, because a lot of the tricks you use to play guitar with feel are a liability with midi guitar. There is the latency factor that you'll need to adapt to also. Depending on your machine, and the synths you have loaded, it can get un-usable.

Overall it's not bad, but mostly a novelty for me due to the drawbacks I mentioned. Axon has a midi converter that is supposed to be fantastic. Much better than the Roland by most accounts, but it's pricey.

This is crazy, but i'm thinking of maybe putting a Midi pickup onto my guitar, straight into the Midi input of my Delta 10/10LT card, create a midi track, and then apply a "bass guitar" sound to it... instead of just playing bass. That would allow me maybe a bunch of other fun sounds to eventually do.

Does anyone here do this, and what would I need to be aware of?
