Make sure when you save the project you save it as a CWP file. If you save it as a MID file, you will lose all of your Sonar specific settings.

Forgive me I am a newbee at this.

I wasn't sure how to disable ms gs synth. I went to options/ midi devices
unchecked ms gs synth and moved it to the bottom. (I could not figure how to remove it.)
my only options to check were PC-80 synth , player , and midi out. I checked all 3 of them.
Was that what you ment by your suggestion to disable ms gs synth?

Midi files now play thru my controller speaker. I was hoping to be able to pick one of my soft synths.
Also, if I insert a synth into the progect and send the tracks to it it works fine. but if I save the progect, close it, and then reopen it, it still reopens playing thru my keyboard.

I can not seem play my midi files with Microsoft GS wavetable SW synth (historically been default) Also, if I install a soft synth. (for ex. EDIROL VSC) and send each midi track to it, they will play but will not save.

You need to disable the ms gs synth. Its pretty old technology and soft synths have taken over

I can save the progect, close and reopen, and it will have MS wavetable as the synth again.

I recently hooked up a controller (edirol PC-80) and think I messed up a setting somewere when installing it.
