Robert, you are correct and Cakewalk IT confirmed what you said. Thanks for pointing out how you do it. It was a "slap myself on the forehead - DUH! why didn't I think of that" moment. Much easier.

None of the new format programs (SHS7,MC5,GTP4) allow multiple projects.
I use "Save As" a lot for what you are wanting to do. Many times I wll be working on a project, and get different ideas. Record them all, and keep going.
Make sure to do a regular "Save" on your original project.
Then "Save As"(New project name).
Delete the tracks you don't want. Rinse, repeat.
This references the original files, so no new wav files are generated, unlike importing.
It still takes a few clicks, but is much cleaner that what you are doing now.

Greg, I am not familiar with the intricacies of GTP4 as I am a Sonar user. However, there should be a setting in the programs option that allows you to switch opening up multiple projects at one time on and off. You may want to check this out.

In Sonar I move files from one version of a particular song to another for scratch tracks all the time using cut and paste. I think this is a simple matter of a setting.

If each "song" is on it's own track (with descriptive titles), you could export them as .wav files at one time and then open a new project up and import just the .wav you need for that one. Still time consuming as you have to open a new project and import each .wav. Also exporting .wavs at one time makes the files bigger I've noticed.

That's my quick take on it. I've actually wanted to do something similar. Good luck to you.

Ok, here's the deal.

I have a MR8HD portable digital 8-track that I use for remote recording. I take it to my friends house where we record stuff. Sometimes we record specific things and sometimes we just let the tape roll (so to speak) for an hour or two while we play and sing and search for ideas.

So here's the problem: I load the wave tracks from the MR8HD to GTP4 and cut out all the junk, leaving several songs, ideas, jams, etc. I would like to take each of these individual songs, ideas, jams and make a new project for each in GTP4 but I haven't found an easy way to do it because it doesn't look like you can open 2 projects at the same time (where you could copy form project A and paste to a new project). So I have to copy the wave I want - close the project - open a new project - paste the wave - close the second project - open the first project - copy the next wave - etc. etc. etc. This is a pain in the butt.

So, then I tried opening GTP4 and GTP3 at the same time where I could copy a wave from GTP4 and paste to a project in GTP3. This was really really weird because when I pasted to GTP3 and hit playback, it had actually pasted a clip from a different GTP4 project saved on my hard disk. Yes you read correctly. That was just too strange so I tried it again with the same result.

So, any ideas on how to easily transfer individual tracks/waves from one project to a new project?
