Smoochy I totally agree. I told Mike to let it go but some of us are distracted by such things. No I agree too about mix levels. I tend to only look at the masterbuss levels and I have got VU's in front of me and I can tell a lot by looking at those. But I dont even look at fader levels at all. Just turn them up to the point where we want the sound to be.

But that little tip on holding down shift before turning the rotary encoders and getting finer resolustion works very well in the EQ section where the frequency controls behave in a bit of a course manner for me anyway. That makes it much easier. Not required on the main faders as they are the full length throw and are quite fine to adjust anyway.

And by the way you are right. If it is only these little weeny things that are a bit funny, well the rest of it certainly works a treat I totally agree.

you guys are hilarious... and i don't mean that in a nasty way.... sometimes it's nice to see such pettiness. it means that's all you could find wrong with it. i agree... that kind of stuff drives me nuts too but if that's all that's wrong.... hallelujah! praise Jesus! on the subject though... i was a live engineer for most of my adult life and working in dark venues most of the time we really only had our ears to rely on things like levels. either we couldn't see them well enough for minute adjustments or just to busy with the mix to care. i remember once... when i was still fresh i was using one of those crappy 32 channel Yamaha venue boards and i was so worried about the clip and levels. i just couldn't seem to get a tight sound out of it. another teck who just happened to be their took pity on me. asked if i was having trouble... proceeded to turn up the inputs till the clip lights came on. i thought he was drunk. but the mix all of a sudden blossomed into what i was looking for.... he simply said... ya it's a well known flaw with these boards. i guess i just got so used to using my ear that all the blinking lights and level indicators just don't mean much too me. the digital realm is a little different with regards to clipping... but the theory is the same. i always pay attention to how something sounds before i trust my eyes.

Actually Mike what Loveoregon mentioned is true. Holding down the Shift key while turning the rotary encoders for example increases the resolution making them much finer to adjust. Try that while moving faders as well.

Not familiar with whether or not the V-studio has a keyboard or not. But with a computer in 8.5 you can "fine" adjust by holding the shift key down as you are adjusting. It goes by .1 values easily.

I agree completely. That said, it's still sloppy and I wish they'd fix it. It drives me nuts!

There are a few little quirks with the system and what you are saying shows up in other areas too like trying to set the Mic Pre Gains and getting them to eg 30.0 db but it wants to go to 29.9 or 30.1

Now this is the perfection (an anal) side in us coming out and stomping all over the creative side. We just need to say to that situaion go away and dont worry about it. No you are not going to hear a level shift of 0.1 db, well easily anyway. A level shift of 1db can be hard to hear.

Finally got my schedule cleared and have had a chance to really dig into my new VS-700 and I'm really blown away by the improvement in workflow. That said, I have run across one little nitpick that bugs obsessive-compulsives like myself. The faders are less than precise at times. As an example, I might decide I want to drop a track from -9 dB to -10 dB and I either get 9.9 or 10.1, but cannot get the fader to capture at exactly 10.0. Sometimes I can drag the fader way up or down and then settle back down to the value that I want, other times it simply will not capture the precise value no matter what. Of course, I can always correct it with the mouse and keyboard, but it sort of defeats the purpose of the control surface in the first place.

Now before the "just go with what you hear" crowd jumps all over this, let me say this isn't a giant problem, just a little quibble. If there is anyway to fix this, I'd love it. If not, maybe an increase in my meds would calm my OCD enough that I could let it go. " />
